Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It was a decade of incredible change. There was large influx of immigrants from Europe, the automobile gained in popularity, Teddy Roosevelt broke up powerful trusts, the North Pole was conquered and the Wright Brothers took to the air. This brief overview covers the major events of the 1900s (1900 through 1909) from politics and technology to fashion and entertainment. The abbreviated entries give the salient facts but their brevity often simplifies complex events. Black-and-white photos are plentiful. The first entry in the "Decades of the 20th Century" series, this is a serviceable but shallow history of the era. In the correct hands it could be used to encourage kids to read more about any one of the events. The book includes a timeline, bibliography, web sites and index. 2001, Enslow Publishers, $17.95. Ages 12 to 14. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
