Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3 Up-- This series, with an American rather than world focus, covers each decade of the 20th century. In each volume, a page of introduction is followed by a few pages on each year of the decade. The choices of news items include myriad areas from popular music, fashion, and fads, to assassinations and space. Small but useful black-and-white photos make the people and events more real to readers unfamiliar with the period, and add nostalgia for more knowledgeable readers. Adult readers will have kudos and cavils about what is included and what is left out, e.g., 1950s includes Milton Berle, Charlie Brown, and Rosa Parks but nothing about the McCarthyism that chilled that decade. However, in limited space, Duden captures the spirit of the times with important names and events, along with those less vital but still funny or quirky. It is for this overview that students will page through these books. And at report time, they will be a useful place to begin for ideas for further research. ``This Fabulous Century'' series (Time-Life) gives a large volume to each decade, with superior illustrations, but the long articles are not as conducive to browsing as the juicy bites provided here. --Sylvia S. Marantz, Wellington School, Columbus, OH
