The Barnes & Noble Review
If you're determined to change your health for the better, spending a month with Marilu Henner is not such a bad idea. Henner says that she looks and feels better today at 45 than she did in her 20s, when her weight yo-yoed constantly, along with her physical and emotional health. In her bestselling book Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover, she shares her tactics for adopting healthy eating and lifestyle habits, from eating less meat, dairy, and processed foods and more grains, fruits, and vegetables to reducing stress, incorporating exercise into daily life, and even tapping into the mind-body connection and taking advantage of alternative therapies and preventive medicine. Throughout the book she encourages readers to learn her secret: the ability to balance a passion for good food with good eating habits to maintain a stable, healthy weight.

Now, in The 30 Day Total Health Makeover, Henner has adapted her recommendations to a step-by-step 30-day program that will put readers on the road to better health -- fast. The program starts with time for preparation and solidifying the commitment to making a lifestyle transition; then "Boot Camp" begins. In this first week on the program, readers are introduced to the guidelines for healthy eating and eased into changing their habits with food plans and simple recipes. Henner shares smart tips for effortless improvement, such as shaking salad in a bag with just a capful of dressing -- every leaf gets tossed and coated, but the minimum amount of dressing is used. For each day in the program, along with thefoodplans and recipes, Henner includes tips that focus on exercise, motivation, stress reduction, organization, and even beauty. From wearing colors that flatter to softening skin, getting to chores you've been putting off to reducing your exposure to all kinds of toxins, Henner's advice is geared toward helping readers look and feel their best as they improve overall health and well-being.

Henner's warm and encouraging tone will go a long way toward helping readers stay motivated, and the personal photos and stories she includes offer living proof that her health plan gets results. Changing your life is never easy, but Henner might just make you realize why it's worth it, and she gives you the tools you need to make an effective start.

Chapter One

What to Expect
from Each Week

Aside from complete food plans for thirty days, each day also consists of seven tips. There's a Motivational Tip, Exercise Tip, Food Tip, Organizational Tip, Beauty Tip, Spa on a Budget Tip (a.k.a. more bang for your buck!), and even a Total Health Fakeover Tip. I'm not asking you to do each tip every day, but try to read them and accomplish as many as you can. For example, if a particular tip tells you to buy a certain kind of shampoo, you don't have to buy it that day. I'm just suggesting that the next time you're buying shampoo to keep it in mind. Another reason for all of the tips is to get you thinking about something other than food. When those impossible cravings happen, you can channel that energy into organizing your closet, counter, or kitchen. Whatever. Next time you're on the phone, tackle that junk drawer. Instead of mindlessly sitting in front of the television set, give yourself a facial or do some sit-ups during the commercials. You found that extra time to eat -- you can find that extra time to organize. All of these daily tips can be tackled in small increments.

Who knows, maybe six months from now you might say to yourself, "You know what? I remember Marilu told me to organize my sock drawer. I think I'll do that." Or, you might remember one of my Total Health Fakeover tips when you have to be somewhere and aren't quite feeling up to the task. The idea is to have some fun and learn new things that you may never have tried before. But please, don't get overwhelmed. These are all things that I do in my life, but I certainlydon't do all of them at one time. I just want to get you into a mode where you take a look at your life and see all the areas you might want to improve. I know that you're busy (we all are), and you don't have a lot of free time (none of us do). But don't you agree that things are easier when your life is more organized and working like a well-oiled machine? Besides, once you take the time to organize something well, who knows -- you might be inspired to keep it that way. Think of each day like you are back in school and the tips are fun homework assignments that'll benefit you. If you can't get them all done, that's fine, because luckily, you're not being graded -- you're being upgraded.

This 30-day program has been divided into five sections. Countdown, Purple Week (a.k.a. "Boot Camp"), Blue Week, Green Week, and Yellow Week.

Countdown (Or, How to Avoid the Last Supper-or Two)

The first four days of this program begin with what I refer to as "Countdown." For those of you who have not already implemented some of the original ten steps from Total Health Makeover, Countdown is four days where you're going to prepare yourself and your body for the rest of the program. Countdown was created for all those people (you know who you are) who like to go on a wild binge prior to starting a new diet. It would be great if you could have the proper mindset from the start of this program that this is not an end, but a beginning. A really common mistake people make prior to starting any weight loss program is they use their new beginning as an excuse to go crazy and overindulge themselves right before they get started. Sometimes they keep doing it and they never actually get started. A few years ago, two of my sisters and I went to a health spa. One of my sisters showed up in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, and by the time we left for the spa on Sunday, she had eaten her way through L.A., gaining five pounds in the process. It took until Wednesday just to catch up to where she was before she came to town! This is the reason I've put Countdown into the program. I don't want you to have to spend the first four days of Boot Camp catching up. It's like starting with a clean slate. Who wants to spend all of his or her time undoing the damage? Countdown is so you can avoid the "Last Supper" and get the most out of Boot Camp. The idea of Countdown is not to go crazy but to become aware of how you feel and the effect certain foods (or lack of certain foods) are having on your body. It's like a mental and physical preparation. Think of it as the buffer between your old habits and your new life.

I made such a big deal out of doing one step at a time in Total Health Makeover, and I still believe, for this program to be its most effective, you ought to experience each step one by one. But the bottom line is this; you won't hurt yourself by going on this program, no matter where you're starting from. You might be the picture of health already so you're just going to feel even better. Conversely, you may be so far away from the animal you were meant to be that you're going to see dramatic results. And let's just say no matter what steps you did from Total Health Makeover, I'm asking you to live your first four days with NO RED MEAT, NO SUGAR, NO DAIRY PRODUCTS, AND NO ALCOHOL. (The last of which isn't one of the ten steps, but avoiding it should be part of any cleansing period.)

I spent a long time looking for a plan or a program that would work for me, for the way I want to live, and the way I want to feel. This is the plan that made sense. The 10 steps are clear, and the transition was easy. Marilu's chatty style of writing made me feel like she was right there, coaching me to live well. This is factual information at a very basic level - easy for anyone to understand.

This book simplifies the principles behind macrobiotics. When someone first told me about this plan, I thought she was crazy. But it just makes sense and it feels good. I lost weight without trying, my skin cleared up, and I feel clean and healthy. Who'd have thought 'Nardo' has all the answers! (She does...really!!)

When I saw the photo of Marilu on the front, I mentally calculated the years since Taxi, and thought, 'Wow, I want to look like that at 40!' The book contains advice I've heard before, but for the first time, it was explained how to put it into practice. The book is easy to read and easy to incorporate into my lifestyle. The biggest bonus of buying this book was the change the program made in my energy level. Way to go Marilu!
