About the Author

When I was a kid, I wrote an advice column called, "Dear Flying Ace". Who was it that sought my clever counsel? No one. I was ten! I created my own fan base with characters I made up in my head. I wrote handfuls of questions signed by desperate people like, "Lost my Tooth in Tulsa" and, "Help! I Think I Married My Poodle", before turning around and answering them in what I was certain was the most hilarious way. I remember sitting cross-legged on the floor of our kitchen in front of the little turquoise typewriter I got one year for Christmas. It was a beauty! Before connecting with my inner sage, I had to dress the part. The first thing I did was put on the black leather aviator hat with fleece-lined ear flaps that my dad wore when he shoveled snow after a blizzard. Then I'd fling a knitted winter scarf around my neck like Snoopy in his invisible bi-plane. Evidently, my ten year old self was a big believer in having the proper gear to get the creative adrenaline pumping. After painstakingly typing several copies, (my fingers were forever slipping in between the keys), off I'd send the latest edition of "Dear Flying Ace" to every member of my family by snail mail! That's what you call dedication to the craft!

Now I'm fully grown and I'm still making up stories in my head. Many of them center on our growing flock of chickens and ducks and their crazy antics. Take for instance our hen, Happy. She studies snowflakes, wears a colander helmet and drives a scooter when the weather is good. (In winter she drives the pickup truck and sometimes wears a potholder on her head.) Happy spends most of her time with Sawyer and Peaches. Sawyer is a master baker. Her mealworm scones are legendary. Peaches is a sweet hen. Her best friend is a stick. They make me laugh every day. Oh, the messes they get themselves into! Happy has so much to say that she convinced me to write my first book about her. It's called, "Happy's Journal - Daily Reflections of a Backyard Chicken". Not everything I write is about poultry, but if Happy had her way it would be. I recently finished a new book called, "39 Poems that Don't Stink!" You'll have to read it to see if it contains any references to our feathered friends.
