At first glance this seems like just another pseudo-science mambo jumbo worded attempt to appeal to people’s fascination and lack of understanding of how the brain works and how we can best utilize our brain function. On second glance it appears that the author has put together a well-written appeal for readers to revitalize their brain active. The thesis of the book states that our brains are like computers and need to be restarted every once in a while. The concept is sound and that is shown more and more through each chapter. It is a 7 day overhaul of the brain as a muscle. The theory is that it is doing mundane things only and that through this course of action over a period of 7 days that function is renewed. New pathways are created and you your mind will be sharper and clearer. I especially liked the idea, in Chapter 5, of speed reading being used as a way to give your brain a killer workout. Every once in a while your brain needs something like that. I have always wanted to practice speed reading and when I tried it I wanted to make it a habit. At the end of the 7 days it does feel as if you are thinking in a different way.
Some might find the title of this book intriguing; others might find it cliché. I admit that I was a little skeptical at first, but I was definitely curious, and I have to say this book is quite an interesting read. Essentially, the aim of this book is to help you train your brain and increase efficiency (“brainpower”). The best part is that the book outlines tips and strategies to try over 7 days, so that you don’t feel overwhelmed with information all in one go. Some of the tips for increased brainpower include things like how to clear your mind, how to strengthen connections between body and mind, how to exercise your brain, etc. There are actual exercises, which are quite fun, to help you through the process. I really appreciated the fact that there are a few instructions at the beginning of the book, which outline how to approach the book itself. This section contains very pertinent information about the brain and how it work, and really encourages you to take the time to read the book and put into practice the different tips, instead of breezing through the book in one sitting. I also really liked the fact that there are tips about how a healthier diet can help the brain, with examples of different foods that can be beneficial. While I would have liked to see more references to research-based articles, I do appreciate the fact that the book links to external resources such as audio clips on YouTube. In sum, this book is an easy read, and the content is interesting and engaging. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to train their brain to be more sharp and efficient.
