The focus of the book is to follow the step by step guides by the author, including food and diet, meditation and mind therapy, sunlight and laughter, lifestyle practices and other techniques that will ultimately help sufferers turn their ailment around. As a reader, I felt the author was very thoughtful about the issue of depression, and has articulated a plan for those dealing with depression that is both realistic and achievable through the book’s instructions and information. What the author does well is provide a strong reminder of the importance of a balanced lifestyle and ensuring that focusing on depression as a condition is a multi-faceted approach and needs complete commitment. The promise of 7-Day Depression Challenge: Deal with Your Depression in Seven Days also does not propose a miracle cure, and the author quickly states that all situations are unique. What Challenge Self, the author, does is help the reader ‘deal’ with depression quickly in a short period of time, but reinforces that the changes must be sustainable and focused by the sufferer. The book itself is a great self-help guide for those looking for realistic and achievable support for their ailment, and something that will reinforce the need to focus on many aspects of change (not just the one thing). I commend the author for putting together an easy to read guide that will certainly support those who are suffering from depression with a way forward.
Dealing with one’s depression in only seven days sounds more than a little optimistic, and in reality, is probably not really feasible. However, if a person follows the steps outlined in 7-Day Depression Challenge, and employs them consistently, over time, I believe one could experience tangible results in alleviating the symptoms of mild depression. The book is laid out in sort of a daily journal format, wherein the author suggests reading only one chapter per day, implementing the recommended steps, and journaling one’s thoughts and results. While I find Mr. Seth’s recommendations to be rather simplistic and basic, they are good reminders that if we employ a healthy lifestyle, consistently, it will go a long way to help combat mild forms of situational or seasonal depression. While the recommended steps, such as diet, meditation, sunlight and laughter, are arguably good lifestyle practices, Mr. Seth neglected to adequately pull the pieces together for the reader. Does one simply read the daily readings for seven days, write down a few thoughts and results and then move on to something else – believing oneself to be free of depression? Or, should the reader be integrating each of the seven steps into more of a daily routine and complete change in lifestyle going forward? In its current form, the reader is left to figure that out on his/her own. One thing on which I agree with the author, is that there is no “magic pill” when dealing with depression – each person and situation is unique. Whether mild, moderate or severe, depression should be taken seriously and the one suffering from it should be treated respectfully. 7-Day Depression Challenge is a good place to start to determine one’s next steps in dealing with depression.
