Chapter One

Day 1: The Heart

When you visit the doctor for a checkup, he/she examines your eyes, ears, throat, and then listens to your heartbeat. The doctor is checking for abnormalities. An abnormality is something unusual. Sometimes the symptoms of an abnormality are easily seen, but sometimes you need a doctor to observe the symptoms that you cannot see. Doctors use CT Scans, Ultrasound, and other tests to get a clear and detailed picture of your body to detect what's happening on the inside of you.

On this first day of your journey, you are going on a spiritual checkup with the help of the Lord, your Healer. Allow God to examine your heart because you don't want any hidden hurts to hinder your relationship with God.

Examine Your Heart

Psalm 119:9 (NIV) reads, How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word." Following and obeying the word of God is the only way that you can cleanse your heart, ways, thoughts and attitudes. Ask God to search your heart, to see if there is anything in your heart that is not like Him. Then, ask Him to create in you a clean heart and to help you get rid of the things that are not pleasing to Him. You can't do this on your own; this is why you need His help.

Let's look at how the human heart works. As long as your heart beats you are alive, if it stops then you die; so, it is important to have a healthy heart. Blockages in the heart can hinder it from working properly. A blockage is the interruption of a normal function. When a blockage occurs, the person does not have a healthy heart and may need surgery to remove the blockage.

Your "spiritual" heart is your inner man, who you really are. Are you angry with someone? Is there someone that you do not like? If your answer is yes, then write their name(s) here

_______________________________________,_________________________________ _, ______________________, _____________________.

Be honest about how you really feel. This is between you and God. God is the only one that knows your heart completely. Sometimes your heart can trick you; this is why you need God to reveal your heart to you.

Do you have any bad feelings or thoughts about a parent, sister, brother, classmate, friend or someone else? It is time to release those feelings. Give those feelings and that person to the Lord. Don't let anyone or anything cause blockages in your spiritual heart. God wants to help you, by His Holy Spirit, to get rid of those feelings. He can do it if you tell him the truth; you might as well He knows the truth anyway, He just wants to hear you say it.

Prayer: Father God, I thank you that you love me, and that you want the best for me. I want to please you and be more like you. You forgave me for all of my sins. I want to forgive everyone who has wronged me and everyone that I have bad feelings towards. Teach me how by your Holy Spirit to forgive. You told me in your word to love my neighbor as myself and that I need to forgive just as you have forgiven me. I release (say the person(s)' names) to you Lord. I want a clean heart. I want a heart like yours. I want to be a child after your own heart. I forgive them and I thank you for forgiving me. I love you God and I thank you for showing me how to have a clean and healthy heart, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Suggested Reading:

Heart - Deuteronomy 4:29, Psalm 119:11, Psalm 119:34, Proverbs 3:5-6, Proverbs 4:20-23, Matthew 6:19-21

Forgive - Mark 11:25-26, Colossians 3:12-13

After reading, pray and ask God to speak to you and help you to understand His word. God loves you, He cares about you and He is listening to you. Give God thanks!

Day 2: The Mind

Now that you have examined your heart, it is time to examine your mind. One of the instruments that a doctor uses to test for abnormalities in the brain is a MRI. A MRI uses radio waves and magnetism to produce a detailed picture of the brain. It can detect an abnormality as small as 5 mm.

The brain is a very powerful organ. It controls your ability to move, eat, speak and think. When a person suffers severe trauma to the brain it can leave him/her in a vegetative state. A vegetative state is the state of being partially awake and yet unconscious. He/she no longer has the ability to talk, eat, or move because of the damage to their brain.

God wants you to have a healthy mind and He wants you to think the way that He thinks. A healthy mind is having the mind of Christ which thinks about things that are pure, lovely, noble, of a good report and worthy of praise. Your enemy and God's enemy is the devil. The devil wants to poison your thoughts. He wants you to be in a spiritually vegetative state so that you are unable to think God's thoughts, speak the word of God, or move at God's prompting. God wants you to be fruitful, being fruitful means being very productive. It is the evidence that you are growing and moving toward God's will, goals, plans and purpose for your life.

God says in the Bible that when you have thoughts that are not like His, you have to cast them down. To cast down something means to destroy it. Purposely destroy those bad thoughts and think God's thoughts. His thoughts are not a mystery; they are available for you to read in the Bible.

Since your thoughts determine your actions, you need to think about the right things. The devil knows that if he can make you think about something bad, long enough, then you will believe it and do it. As a believer, God has given you authority, power and access to Him and His kingdom. The devil has no right to rule you or your thoughts. You don't have to believe the lies of the devil, you can destroy those thoughts and command the devil to shut up and get out in Jesus' name.

Another powerful thing about thoughts is, people can tell you how wonderful, smart, pretty or talented you are; but if you don't think it's true then what they say won't matter. You have to think that about yourself. You hear your thoughts about yourself more than you hear anyone else's thoughts about you. God will help you, by His Holy Spirit, with your thoughts. He is a very present help in the time of need. The Bible says that God's thoughts are not your thoughts and this is why you have to have God's thoughts. You have to come to Him open and honest about your thoughts. God already knows what you are thinking anyway, good or bad. He hears your thoughts afar off, way before they enter your mind.

Prayer: Father God, I want my mind to be pure. I ask that you help me purify my mind. Wash away the thoughts that do not please you. I have bad thoughts about _______________ (Say the thought(s)) and I need your help to guard my thoughts. Help me to keep my mind on you so that I can have perfect peace. Thank you, God for being so faithful to me and for loving me. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Suggested Reading:

Thoughts (Mind): Proverbs 12:5, Proverbs 16:3, Isaiah 26:3-4, Romans 8:5-8, Romans 12: 1-2, Philippians 4:8, 1 Peter 3:8-12, 2 Timothy 1:7.

I also want you to read Jeremiah 29:11-13 & Jeremiah 1:5 so you can see God's thoughts about you as well as to show you that God already knew you and chose you before you did anything good or bad. He will never change His mind about you either. He is here to help you.

After you read, pray and thank God that you have a mind to serve Him. Ask Him to guide your thoughts so that they can be more like His. He loves it when you want to think what He thinks about and do what's on His mind.

Give God thanks!

Day 3: The Mouth

Your mouth was created to be the instrument through which you feed your body and through which you communicate. What you say to yourself and to others is important to God. Your mouth can encourage and bless people or it can discourage and hurt people. Once words are spoken, they become engrained in the heart of the hearer. You cannot take back your hurtful words once they're spoken. Even though you're sorry and you've apologized to the person, it's still too late, your cutting remarks have hit the target—their heart. God is wise and His word is wisdom, wisdom that we need. In the Bible, He warns us about the disastrous effects of speaking negative words to one another. Pay attention to that warning.

You can say negative things for so long and you will begin to believe them. On the contrary, if you say positive things, even for a short time, you start to believe them. God says only good things; say what He says. God never calls you names or makes fun of you and yet He knows everything about you. Follow God's example. Treat others the same way that God treats you. Say good things about yourself and others. This is going to take some work and some time, but remember God is here to help you.

In the bible, the book of James, Chapter 3:1-10 is devoted to teaching us to control our words. I suggest adding that chapter to the end of today's reading. James 3:9-10 reads, "With the tongue we praise our Lord, and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be". You must monitor (to monitor means to keep track of or to check) your words; it is the full-time job of every Christian.

James chapter 3, verse 6 reads, "The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil.... James 3:8 states, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison". Can you stop saying negative things and start saying positive things? This is the act of taming the tongue and with God's help, you can! Just as you decide what healthy foods to eat and what unhealthy foods to avoid, you are also able to control the words that you speak. Telling off someone feels good but stop and think before you speak. Is it really worth it? We all make mistakes and learning to speak positive things takes time and self-control, it is another reason for needing God. The more you pray, study the Bible and think about pleasing God, the more you will talk like Him and love like Him. The good news is, Jesus has already paid the price for us and has pleased God for us. So we can rest in Jesus, ask for His help and He will work all of this through us. Again we cannot do anything for God on our own.

Here are some ways that you can use your words, tongue, and mouth for good. You can bless, praise and exalt the Lord. You can tell others about Him. When you encounter a negative situation, you can find out what the Bible says about it and say that. For example; when you feel sick don't say, "Oh, I'm so sick." Instead say what the Bible says in Isaiah 53:5 ... and by his wounds I am healed. It is not that you don't feel sick—that may indeed be the case; however, the truth is that you are healed because Jesus was beaten for your healing. He paid the ultimate price for you. God wants you to be whole in every area of your life. God's word is more real and more powerful than anything you will ever experience.

When the devil came to tempt Jesus, Jesus spoke words, but not just any words; He said what the Bible said. If Jesus, being God in human form, did that, then you have to do that as well. Your words don't have the power to move a leaf but God's word is the most powerful weapon that you have and it is able to defeat your enemy, the devil. Your problems, difficulties, hurts, and challenges are no match for the word of God; because of His word, those things cannot destroy you.

To whom are you listening? One of the devil's tactics is persuasion. Persuasion is an argument that moves someone toward a preplanned course of action. The devil already knows what he wants you to do; his problem is getting you to do it. His words sound so good but he is a liar, in fact he is the father of lies. The devil is deceitful. His goal is to steal, kill and destroy you. He wants to see you hurt, he wants to see you fail and he wants to see you blame God and then turn away from God. The devil knows that he's no match for God, he tried that one-on-one and failed miserably, so his plans are to destroy what's closest to God—you. Do not give the devil an inch. Never listen to his schemes or his lies. The moment he tries to tell you something command him to shut up in Jesus' name.

God is the exact opposite of the devil. He will always tell you the truth. He does not, cannot and will not lie. God is the most awesome and powerful being ever and there is nothing that he cannot do. He has never lied and He never will. God knows, has and wants what is best for you. He has a wonderful life planned for you, if you live for Him. Living for God is not impossible; you can do it with the help of the Lord. Jesus is the only one who has ever and could ever live a perfect life. So look to Him for help, guidance and answers.

When situations arise and you want to speak negatively just ask yourself, "What would Jesus say?" If Jesus wouldn't say it then you shouldn't say it either. If you can't say it in front of your parents or pastor then it shouldn't be said. Your honesty is important as you continue this seven-day journey with God. He knows all of your mistakes—past, present and future and yet, it does not stop Him from loving you, wanting you, accepting you. Neither did it stop Him from sending His only Son, Jesus to die for you.

When you accepted Jesus into your heart, God forgave you of all your sins. When you make a mistake, and you will, do not run from God but run to Him. Tell God what you did wrong. Remember that God is on your side and you are forgiven. He is here to help you. God knows what you said and He even knows your thoughts before you think them, good or bad. God is faithful and when He said that He would forgive you, He meant it. God cannot ever lie.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you now with my mind, heart and mouth. I want to speak your words. I have not always said your words so I need your help to be more like you. I want to speak what you speak. I am sorry for the wrong words that I've said about

_____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________ (Write that person's name or the situation) I want to be closer to you, show me how. I need to know how to think and act more like you every day. I want to follow your example. I cannot live by bread alone but I can live by every word that comes from your mouth. I thank you for your love, mercy, grace and forgiveness. I love you Lord God. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Suggested Reading:

Psalm 19:14, Psalm 34: 1, Psalm 49:3 Psalm 141:3, Matthew 4:4, James 3:1-10, Hebrews 13:15-16

God is always with you and you can come to Him about any and every thing. God cares about you. He's your Heavenly Father and He loves you. The bible says that you will have in your life whatever you say, so start saying what God says.

Give God thanks!

Day 4: The Ears

In the space provided, please write down the thing that you decided to fast _______________. Congratulations, you have lived three days without it! Isn't that amazing, when you may have thought you could not last an hour without it? The only thing that you cannot live without is God.

Welcome to your Day Four of the journey. Congratulations again, you have done some major cleaning, but there is still more to do. Fasting is an effective process that allows you to focus on your relationship with God. You can focus on praying and reading the Bible more than before. Fasting is a sacrifice. You have turned away from the things that distract you and are busy tending to the things of God. When you pray and read the bible, you are communicating to God that He is top priority in your life and you care about His will, plans and purposes.

Grab your Q-tips; it is time to clean your spiritual ears. You must monitor what you hear. Have you ever cleaned your ears with a Q-tip and after pulling it from your ears you were surprised at the amount of wax that buildup? You probably didn't know it was there until you took the time to clean it. The same is true with what you hear. You will never know how much junk you hear until you decide to spend time cleaning out what doesn't belong in your life. We live in a world where people say things that are contrary to the word of God as a way of life. You can't stop people from saying such things, but you can make the continual effort to guard your ears so that someone else's junk doesn't become a part of your life. What you hear leaves an impression. An impression is an influence or effect on your feelings, senses or mind. The only thing that should impress you is the powerful word of God.
