Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
You've no doubt heard of other books similar in title, but this is the first that deals with children. The author, an award-winning National Post reporter, was given an assignment to write an article, but luckily, it turned into a book. The author traveled throughout North America interviewing 7 to 12 year-olds from numerous cultural contexts seeking their unique opinion on what is important to them and how they feel they have become effective in reaching their goals. There are 21 young adults in all, and their personal stories are categorized under such strategies as: Choose a Good Role Model, Be Organized, Make the most of What You've Got, Don't Be Afraid to Try New Things, and so on. Most of the stories are descriptive, but nearly all use some of the students' own words. Take David Armstrong, for instance. David, age 11, has turned his passion for magic into a hobby that has given him recognition and assisted in developing a healthy self-concept and belief in his abilities. There's a twist to each story, but the one underlying quality in all of the stories is that children need grownup that care about them and encourages them. Without exception, each story features an adult, usually a parent, who believed in and encouraged each young person. There's some real inspirational reading here for youngsters and adults. 2001, Lobster Press,
