When reading a new author for the first time, one has no idea what to expect. I must say, I was delighted with A Better Man, first in The Men of Halfway House series. Take Matthew, a man who has tried to live up to his family’s expectations and when he couldn’t, was continually put down. Five years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit changed him. And Julian, who has been through his own kind of hell, but has always stuck to the straight and narrow. Put these two men together in a house Matthew wants to convert to be a halfway house for men right out of prison and what do you get? A simply sweet romance. They are attracted to each other, but at first are too afraid to mention it and even once they do, they are afraid to lose what they’ve finally found. I love that this book covered an entire year – it made their romance work for me. (I’m not a fan of insta-romance) Both men had emotional issues stemming from family and yet they had enough mettle to realize that what they had together was worth fighting for. It missed out on being 5 stars because in some ways the book was too simplistically written. But it is still a good read I would highly suggest. FiveStars This was a fantastic story. It had a little of everything, humor, love and drama. It had a wonderful plot that wasn't just sex. It kept me interested and I adored Julian and Matt. It was so refreshing to read a story that involved two men trying to make a difference. Julian was charming and quick witted, found myself chuckling at his comebacks. Such a strong, caring guy coming from an abusive childhood. Matt was on edge about everything, but I loved how they came together and slowly built their relationship. It was great how they had to work at the relationship and slowly trusted each other more and more. Best part of the whole book was when they took on Matt's mom and the dad came around. Loved that part. I expect the next book to just as good and can't wait to read what happens at the halfway house. I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads. Sherry

I first want to thank my partner in crime, Debbie, for recommending this book to me. She has read a lot more of the m/m genre than I for no other reason than I've been catching up on fantasy and paranormal genres. This one though, she said I had to read. I did and I'm damned glad she was insistent! There is simply nothing that I can criticise about this book and trust me, I was looking. I adore how the characters get to know each other over time - yes, there's instant attraction and we all know that exists but this pair actually had time to get to know each other before moving the relationship on any further. For this reason, although they argue and fall out, they are stronger together. J never reacts the way that Matt expects him to which makes for good reading because it means you're not sure about the reaction either. There is a lot going for this pair and a lot of obstacles in their way too but because of the strength of their foundation, they face it together. This is an excellently written, well paced and moving story that brought both disbelief and tears to my eyes. A fantastic start to the series and I will definitely be looking for more by this author as well as the continuation of the series. Highly Recommended.

***** I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review***** Jaime Reese did an amazing job writing this book. I was worried in the beginning that I wouldn't get the detail that I like in a book because the time frame of the book is a while year. However that was not the case, there was so much detail in the book that I could visualize everything in my head while I was reading. Almost like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book. Once I started reading there was no turning back. I could quit turning the pages. Matt is trying to start over after being in prison for 5 years. He is trying to make something that will help people like him. He has to deal with his very controlling mother who only cares about appearances and the family name. Along this journey he ends up finding himself and love. Julian is trying to find work when he stumbles across matt and his project . He signs on to take the job to renovate the house not expecting to fall for his boss. Matt and Julian's relationship has it's ups and downs as they both struggle with trying to keep their secrets from the other and fight the instant attraction they both feel. Once they let go and give in to the attraction and spill their secrets they both begin to develop who they are together. With Julian Matt finally has the strength to come out to his family and live his life the way he wants too. This is an amazing love story that will have you laughing and crying. During parts of the story my heart broke for the characters, but together they can overcome anything. This is a must read!

A Better Man by Jaime Reese Rating 4 Stars Summary: Matthew Doner is starting over. After a five-year prison term that alters every aspect of his life, he receives a bequest from his aunt with the stipulation that he use the money to make things right. Breaking free of the long-standing role he’s played and inspired by the few who support him, he decides to create a safe place where people like him can find purpose and start a new life. Julian Capeletti likes challenges. He is confident, brash, stubborn, and just what Matt needs. Desperate for work after a downturn of luck, he accepts the job to renovate Matt’s crumbling building. Over the course of a year, romance simmers between them as they restore the house. But there’s a bigger renovation that must take place in their hearts. To become better men, they need to learn to trust each other even with secrets and painful memories they fear may rip them apart My Thoughts: I truly enjoyed this story. It had such a great message. Everyone deserves a second chance. Matt has suffered for years in prison, and for what? Because he loves his family and will do anything to protect them, even if they don't always show him that love in return. He is determined to make his life better and to help others along the way. So with the help of his dear aunt he buys an old house with plans to restore it. He will provide a home for those people who feel like they are alone after getting out of prison. He wants to help them with their second chance in life. This dream is his second chance and he is determined to see it through. He gives himself a deadline of one year to complete it, but can he find the right person to help? He placed ad after ad looking for a handyman to work for him. Every person who showed up turned around and left once they saw the building. His frustration is at an all time high because he is running out of time. Julian is in a bad spot. The job he was working on was shut down and funds frozen. He is searching endlessly for work. He is behind on his rent and is running out of options. He finds an ad for a Handyman, but the list of job requirements are much more than a handyman is able to do. This person is looking for a contractor. He decides that he doesn't have much of a choice if they need a handyman then he will be the best damn handyman around. Julian's mind takes flight when he sees the old building. He can feel that this is the job he needs to bring him back to life. He goes inside to apply and is met by a grouchy man. A grouchy man with a plan. He can tell that this means something to him. So after discussing details Julian moves into the house with him to start working. Now begins a long, hard journey to meet the deadline. Can this journey turn into something more? You will have to read to find out. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys m/m reads. Its a wonderful uplifting story with a dose of sexy men. :)

My Review: 4.4 Star Review - A Better Man Sweet Romance between Matthew and Julian that develops over a years time. The romance at times is sappy but works for this story. Some parts in the story make you want to yell but others will have you so happy with the characters you just want to hug them. I did feel that they pulled out the I love you way to fast. Really before the full trust was there which felt weird. The chemistry between them is hot and the kisses are scorchers!! The extended family I just didn't like. The mother was a not nice person and I totally wanted to smack her with my kindle. Hope she does not show up in too much more of the series....
