An excellent blend of mystery and questions of family, religion, and culture. UNC-Charlotte religion professor "teaches" us about these issues and ultimately about our own identity through the medium of this novel. Yes, it's a page-turner, but it also calls upon the reader to reflect on his/her questions of fate and choice.

Settle into your favorite chair with a hot cup of tea and dive into the world of Olivia and Victoria who are separated at a young age and go on to lead very different lives, one in America; one in China. What I loved about this novel is that it illuminates so much about Eastern and Western religions without getting on either soap box. It’s a transparent look at the beauty and darkness of many philosophies it covers - Daoism, Buddhism, Catholicism, and more. I learned a great deal through these characters about the historical climate of the Mid-20th century but it never feels like a lesson. More like a spyglass into worlds and time periods I knew little about. I recommend this book for book clubs ( our club really enjoyed it) as it spurs weighty discussions about what it means to be an American, a woman, a sister, and a healer.
