Overview

A Christmas Bride / Christmas Beau by Mary Balogh

In a pair of classic Regency-era Christmas romance novels from New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh, the holidays herald the greatest gift of all: unexpected, all-consuming love.

A CHRISTMAS BRIDE
The very wealthy Edgar Downes has promised his aging father to finally take a bride—specifically, to wed a titled lady by Christmas. London is full of pretty, proper, and eligible misses, but it’s the widow Helena, Lady Stapleton, in a shocking red dress, who captures Edgar’s attention. Helena is intrigued by the seductive stranger—but he’s simply not in her class. Marriage, of course, would never do. But in a season of miracles, something wondrous is about to happen.

CHRISTMAS BEAU
Not even the warm, forgiving Christmas spirit can stop the Marquess of Denbigh from settling his score with Judith Easton: The beautiful young widow injured Denbigh’s pride years ago by jilting him for another man. Now that Judith is free from a nightmare marriage, the handsome marquess has her in his sights—and wants her in his arms. But to trust the tender words on his lips, Judith must not only see past the hardness of his heart, but learn once again to trust her own heart’s desire.

These are both great christmas reads. Balogh presents us with scarred, wounded characters and then takes us on their journey to love and redemption. Oh and did I say...sensuous and delicious while doing that healing Christmas thing? As I said, satisfying.

Christmas Beau was very good It was easy to like all the characters and want to see the hero & heroine get a HEA. Unfortunately in Christmas Bride the heroine was very unlikeable It was very hard to want to see her get a HEA Found myself hoping the hero would get tried of her antics and dump her

I was very disappointed with this book. The story lines were depressing, and the characters were not ones you fall in love with. The second story I did not even finish.

Ms. Balough' s characters in these two stories are older and more experienced with lots of emotional baggage. She uses the Christmas season to allow her characters to find love and redemption.

I liked Christmas Bride better but they were both good stories.  Very quick to get into and fun to read. .

A Christmas Bride had a kick to it while Christmas Beau was the usual jilted/revenge story. I preferred the former because the heroine's  nasty behavior was not explained by extenuating circumstances. She did wrong, suffered for it, tried to make reparations and find some  peace. True, she was unlikable but I think she ultimately rose above it.  In the Christmas Beau everyone behaved in predictable ways. It wasn't bad but it was written on autopilot.

I am hesitant to recommend this book. While there were some cute moments, they could not redeem the lack of sizzle nor my lack of interest in the heroine. I liked that the author promoted an older, more experienced female lead, but it seemed forced. The heroine's past was referenced several times, but the big "reveal" was not compelling and seemed to come out of left field. Bottom line, I had a difficult time connecting to any of the characters and II do not plan on purchasing a book from this author again.

Great Holiday Read! I loved the characters, plots, locations, and flavor of the novels! They really got me in the Christmas spirit! I only wish each of them were full length!
