A Cold Dark Place by Toni Anderson

This is Book #1 in the COLD JUSTICE series.

Justice isn't always black or white. Sometimes it's cold and dark.

Former CIA assassin Alex Parker works for The Gateway Project, a clandestine government organization hell-bent on taking out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. Alex doesn't enjoy killing, but he's damn good at it. He's good at dodging the law, too-until a beautiful rookie agent has him wondering what it might be like to get caught.

FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney has spent years hunting the lowlife who abducted her identical twin sister eighteen years ago. Now, during an on-going serial killer investigation, Mallory begins to suspect there's a vigilante operating outside the law. She has no choice but to take him down, because murder isn't justice. Is it?

When Mallory starts asking questions, The Gateway Project management starts to sweat, and orders Alex to watch her. As soon as they meet, the two begin to fall in love. But the lies and betrayals that define Alex's life threaten to destroy them both-especially when the man who stole her sister all those years ago makes Mallory his next target, and Alex must reveal his true identity to save the woman he loves.

About the Author

New York Times and USA Today international bestselling author, Toni Anderson, writes dark, gritty Romantic Suspense novels that have hit the Amazon and Nook Top 10, and iBooks Top 50. Her novels have won many awards.

A former Marine Biologist from Britain, she inexplicably ended up in the geographical center of North America, about as far from the ocean as it is possible to get. She now lives in the Canadian prairies with her Irish husband and two children and spends most of her time complaining about the weather.

Toni has no explanation for her oft-times dark imagination, and only hopes the romance makes up for it. She's addicted to reading, dogs, tea, and chocolate.

The author wrote a book with an intricate and well thought plot. He makes his readers care about the characters. He comes across as an experienced writer who knows how to tell a good story. He even managed to keep the violence to a level that promotes the story rather than slowing it down. Unfortunately he did not succeed as well where sex is concerned. Page affter page of fitting body parts around and inside other body parts were skipped in frustration by this reader. The auther would have done well to insert sex only where it moves the story forward.

I rarely give a review but this author is an excellent writer and storyteller. I found it difficult to put this book down once I started reading it. I just discovered this series and I am already starting on book three. I highly recommend this author.

Fasr-paced action keeps you guessing till the end. A solid suspense story with believable characters that the author pulls together (against the literary and credibility odds) into a cohesive and satisfying ending. Definitely following the rest of the series!

Author is a good soryteller. This gripped my interest. Ending was a litle philosophical, then turned gray. I noticed minor edits... search for college (should be colleague), and blurry-eyed instead if bleary-eyed, and a couple of other minor distractions that I can't remember anymore. Worth my time reading this again, it was really good. Trying the others in the series.

I wasn't sure about this in the beginning, but I kept reading, and I was glad I did. This story had a lot of twists and turns and great character development. Great story!!

Believable characters with a plot that is a grabber, but not confusing to follow. Laid good clues in an inoffensive way throughout. Would definitely like to read others from this author

This was an excellent read. I couldn't put it down. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars were the occassional detailed sex excerpts that I felt weren't necessary in a top notch crime drama. Fortunately, they weren't too lengthy or too frequent. It was also a bit predictable, but most stories are. Otherwise, it was extremely good and you won't be disappointed.

This is my first read by this author, I have to say “awesome”. This book kept me involved and wondering what would happen next. It is hard to define the line between bad and really evil. In this book the line blurred in many places but all worked out in the end. Really good story and I will definitely go back for another in this series.

Murder and romance. I sometimes think that listening to the audio version of a thriller makes it harder to follow. No matter how well narrated it is, it's still difficult to go back over the bits you've missed, and as I'm usually doing something else at the same time, driving, ironing, washing-up, it's also easier to find yourself in that position. So, in order to write this review I have just been back and replayed the beginning of each chapter - especially the finalé. It was quite interesting listening again, knowing who was guilty. Mallory Rooney is an FBI agent. She was parted from her twin sister eighteen years previously, when Paton was abducted from their bedroom. Mallory has joined the FBI in the hope that she might be able to shed some light on her sister's disappearance, and she is definitely not looking for a romantic relationship. Professional assassin, Alex Parker, is also not looking for a love interest, but he and Mallory are drawn to each other from their very first meeting. There is a killer on the loose, who is targeting young women; and women who go missing for no apparent reason have been tuning up some time later, dead, with the initials 'PR' cut into their skin. Mallory wonders about the coincidence that these were her sister's initials, but has no reason to connect the two. However, it is when Mallory starts to suspect that she may be the killer's next target, that the tension builds. Interestingly, there are a few chapters narrated from the point of view of the killer, although we do not know who s/he is. A couple of the victims have a chance to air their POVs. Eric G. Dove did an excellent job of narrating A Cold Dark Place, although I found myself surprised that it was narrated by a man, I felt I'd expected a female narrator, given that a lot of the story was told from a woman's perspective. My only problem with the book was the rather overplayed love scenes, which could have been seriously edited, but that's just my opinion. 3.5 stars.

I have been on a romantic suspense kick lately and when this book was brought to my attention it just appealed in every way.  The story is well thought out and it is easy to get immersed in the world.  One thing that I truly appreciated was that I never guessed who the killer was.  I found out when the author wanted me too and not before.  I’ve read too many book when I guessed right from the start and ended up frustrated.  Not the case with A Cold Dark Place.  The passion between Alex and Mallory was more intense than I was expecting for this type of novel.  I am not complaining; this is a huge positive in my book, no fade to blacks in this novel.  A lot of the twist were surprising and I was never sure where the story was heading.  I was completely entertained the entire time I was listening to the audiobook.  Eric G Dove did a great job with the narration and I will keep my eye out for more of his work.  Overall I am giving this 4.5 Boundless Stars, I really enjoyed it....Sara

I love a good thriller and A Cold Dark Place by Toni Anderson fits the bill. From the opening pages, man’s inhumanity to man rears its ugly head. Toni wastes no time in twisting and turning the plot, surprising me early, and I love it! As things become more dangerous and complicated, I become more engrossed in a story I was already very invested in. My favorite novels are suspense/thrillers and Toni keeps the twists and turns coming, and the suspense building at a rapid pace. Criminal minds on steroids! I LOVED A Cold Dark Place and found it almost impossible to put down, but my eyes were blurring and it was getting late…or should I say early. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!
