About the Author

Dr. Melissa Caudle has over 20 years as a teacher and principal. She earned her PhD in statistical research and administration from the University of New Orleans. She began her career in education as a high school special education teacher. After six short years in the classroom, the school system promoted her to principal. She became an expert in the area of school crisis prevention, having written numerous articles and books on school safety. She also received recognition internationally for her work in the prevention of juvenile delinquency. Her books took her on a lecture circuit all over the world including Singapore, Australia, Egypt, and the United Kingdom. She also became "High School Principal of the Year." Additionally, Dr. Caudle was the host of a weekly television program in the south called "Family Matters with Dr. Mel."

Dr. Caudle is married and the mother of three children who have become successful adults in the community. She has three grandsons who are the inspiration for the Open Door Natural Learning book series. "I became very involved in my grandchildren's lives and take care of them whenever I can," Caudle says. "They are a joy to my life. I realized that I never lost the teacher in me and was continually teaching my grandchildren in everything I did with them. Although they think we were playing, I provide them a natural environment to learn in and to have fun with them at the same time." This philosophy transcends in her children's book series.

Dr. Caudle strongly believes in teaching children through the natural learning process. She sees every opportunity as a learning opportunity. Many of her activities in her other books rely on everyday items found in and around the home. In her children's book series, she strives to bridge learning with fun.
