A December to Remember

On his countrified Christmas album, A December to Remember, Aaron Tippin mixes some honky-tonkin' originals with traditional fare and winds up with a subtle, sunny holiday outing. Among the new songs, the nostalgic "Christmas Is the Warmest Time of Year" (co-written by Tippin and his wife Thea) is set to a gentle, loping western swing rhythm; that classic sound plus Tippin's warm, friendly baritone give the track the feel of a vintage Ernest Tubb cut. Thea Tippin stands out with her plaintive vocal duet with Aaron on "Away in a Manger." Fiddles, pedal steel, and full-throttle guitars fuel the fanciful story of Mrs. Claus filling in for her absent hubby on "The Year That Santa Never Came," another impressive Tippins collaboration. The rock-'n'-rollin' seasonal standard "Run Rudolph Run," first brought to life by Chuck Berry, gets a brisk, energetic workout here too. Before closing with a stately, acoustic reading of "Silent Night," Aaron and Thea get together again for another original duet, "A December to Remember," with Thea showing off some Crystal Gayle-like vocal chops and blending her voice beautifully with Aaron's in a well-crafted tale of lovers treasuring each other as the best gift each could ever receive. It's a nice touch on an engaging album that never loses its bearings.
