Overview

Winter 1818 -- As Captain Gabriel Lacey prepares to leave for his upcoming wedding, hes interrupted by his former neighbor, Marianne Simmons, who is concerned about an actress friend whos gone missing. Lacey agrees to help look for the actress, little realizing that the search will bring him against dangerous men who think nothing of abduction and blackmail, or indeed of sending incendiary devices to the innocent.

Laceys compassion tells him to help the actress who is in true danger, but his personal life is changing, and his time for investigation is frequently and frustratingly interrupted. He is also commanded to assist Bow Street in bringing down James Denis, a criminal with whom Lacey now has complicated ties, or risk hanging with him.

The search for the actress takes Lacey from the assembly rooms of the upper-classes to behind the scenes at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, where he finds darkness in all corners. Laceys life and honor are constantly challenged as his circumstances change, and he realizes he can follow no code but his own.

Book 8 in the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries. This is a full-length novel of 84,000 words, twenty-four chapters.

I'm a big fan of the Captain Lacey series of books. This is a good read and comfortable to be reading a new mystery. My only complaint is that the talented and busy author took too long for this book to be available for purchase. Thank you Ashley Gardner for writing this Captain Lacey mystery. Enjoyable read!

But hoped for a little different plot combo. This is not a great unforgettable etc .....few are so that is the four rating because i bought all eight and . not borrowed as i usually do. This means in a few months will re read them. However nine had better be a different plot combo or it is back to borrow three. page counter

This series, Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries, has been great! While I don't usually like this type of book - murder mysteries and books written in the first person, these were a great read. I may go back and re-read the series again, and look forward to more from these authors. Hopefully there will be a #9!

I love the characters in this series and this book is another winner.  Captain Gabriel Lacey gets married and spends his honeymoon looking for the missing friend of his former neighbor, Marianne Simmons.  It is a fast paced read full of danger and intrigue.
