Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite Little Muffin Mae is a fairy. She can do all kinds of spells just like the other fairies, only she usually gets the spells wrong and something disastrous happens, like when she exploded an oven full of cookies. All Little Muffin Mae wants is to be that one very special fairy, the tooth fairy. Every year she gets her hopes up and every year the fairies vote in some other fairy. When Little Muffin Mae finds the missing baby, Buttercup, when no one else could find her, the fairies have a change of heart and decide to give Little Muffin Mae a chance to be the tooth fairy. She’s voted into the job, but the other fairies do worry about their choice. Little Muffin Mae’s first night on the job doesn’t go without hitches, but she improves as she goes along from house to house, gaining the courage she needs to be the best tooth fairy ever. A.J. Culey’s very colorful picture book story, A Fairy’s Job, is a delight to read. Sparkling with bits of humor, the story will appeal to both young children and adults as well. It teaches us all a valuable lesson, that we can be whatever we want to be if we try very hard and truly believe in ourselves. Little Muffin Mae is a clumsy fairy, but her heart is always in the right place and her love of life shines through all her little mishaps. She struggles on her first night as the tooth fairy, but Little Muffin Mae begins to blossom as she sets out to finish the job the best she can, without giving up. She has learned another valuable lesson – to never give up, no matter how difficult the going might be. Success, after all, is something earned, not something given. A valuable story for young and old alike.
