Jennifer Fromke won the ACFW Genesis Award for A Familiar Shore in 2010.

Great Debut!! From the very beginning of the book, the author manages to hook us on. We are introduced to Meg and her adoptive father in the first chapter. That is also when we are introduced to an anonymous person, someone Meg has never met, who hires Meg to execute his will. Sound simple enough? But that is not all. There are many stratums to this plot that are slowly unveiled to the readers. There is enough `family drama', personal struggles and intrigue to keep you interested throughout the novel. Also, there are a number of characters, all well developed. Some I loved to love and some not so much. This story is all about how a single decision can set things into motion and have unimaginable effects. The author's suave writing style, surprise elements in the plot and beautiful settings have managed to steal my heart this time. This being her debut novel, she sure has a great future ahead!

Suddenly uprooted from her familiar haven, young lawyer Meg Marks must venture into the world of the cloistered Vanderzee clan. Their estranged wealthy father employed Meg to research the family, judge their character, and draw up his will with his inheritance divided accordingly. Meg's task proves to be more daunting that she expected as she encounters hostility and uncovers hidden family secrets. Jennifer Fromke's debut novel is a page-turner and had me hooked from the first chapter. Her characters are well-developed and authentic, particularly Meg. I enjoyed the storyline, and the plot twists kept me guessing and engaged. Fans of Mary DeMuth will love this -- PERFECT beach read!

From the first chapter I was swept into this story. Young lawyer Meg Marks is given an unusual task - a man she has never met wants her to decide how his will should be distributed. In order to do so she must meet with his family and judge them on their merits. This alone is enough for a gripping premise, but the author deftly weaves additional layers of conflict, one on top of the next. The plot kept me guessing at every twist and turn, as Meg is drawn deeper into the complex web of relationships in her client's family, and in the process uncovers shattering secrets from her own past. Beneath the page-turning sense of intrigue was an unexpected emotional resonance. Characters I cared for, plunged into situations that tugged at my heart. An atmospheric story with a unique setting, "A Familiar Shore" marks debut author Jennifer Fromke as a talent to watch.
