Overview

Kira, a psychic, a vampire—one of the good ones—has been a very bad girl. She’s run away from the protection of Maxwell, her guardian android, got herself pregnant by a human, and now she wants Max to lie about it.

But androids don’t lie. And if he told the truth to protect her, he’d be dismantled, executed for not properly fulfilling his duties.

Secretly designed as a fully functioning human with supernatural powers, Max has been a very bad android. He’s lied to everyone about everything he is, especially the truth about Kira. If he tells the truth about her pregnancy, her people will kill her unborn child who’s destined to be a dangerous psychic.

Worst of all, Max has fallen in love with Kira and is willing to sacrifice his life for her—a headstrong, yet beautifully delicate young woman who believes him to be her inferior.

A Far Far Better Thing is an interesting tale, with alternate universes and humans, Goldens (psychic beings), Dacons (vampires), and androids all figuring out how to move forward and survive in a world where all of the factions are working at odds. The story follows Max, an android with a secret desire to be more human, and Kira, a Golden, who harbors her own, possibly more dangerous secrets. Kira tries to hide the fact that she is carrying a child, one that goes against her kinds teachings (Goldens and Humans can’t have children together) and Max has seen a future where her child may be the cause of total devastation to all life. The two try to figure out a way to survive and keep the child safe, and try to come to terms with the feelings they have for each other. The story is very imaginative, with the creation of multiple universes and the characters wielding powers. Max’s motives and true powers remain mysterious, which gives keeps the tension going throughout the story. I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Sadly I have to say this book could have been amazing. I had a very hard time getting into this book. The premise is easy to understand. A girl is basically in love with her guardian. Kira is pregnant by a human but in love with Max and can't say anything because Max would no longer exist. I found this book to be very difficult to read. It bounced all over the place and found myself confused most of the time even though it was a short book. I liked the idea that Kira and Max had a forbidden love, it makes things so much more interesting when it's forbidden. Although I did'n't really enjoy this book, that doesn't mean that others wouldn't. I would recommend this book to someone that likes science fiction novels.  I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

S.B.K. Burns has come up with an interesting story line that includes several different types of characters, the Goldens who have psychic abilities and currently are the ones in charge, androids and androids who are also human who were created to watch over the Goldens, humans, and vampires.  This story takes place in multiple times and universes with travel through portals. This story has two main characters, Kira, a Golden, and Maxwell, an android.  However, Maxwell has been created differently from the other androids and was created with more human qualities.  Maxwell has been put in charge of taking care of Kira, who has difficulty with staying out of trouble.   While I enjoyed the two main characters, at times I got lost in the story and had a difficult time understanding what was going on. With so many different universes, I didn't always understand where they were.  In the beginning of the story, there is reference to a pregnancy that helped later with trying to understand if the characters were in the future or how far they were in the future.   I did enjoy the book and I see that there is a series, Legends of the Goldens, that would probably make things a little more clear as to how all of the characters work together.   I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys science fiction romance novels. The heroine could shape shift, read minds, and teleport if she could only learn how. She is pregnant, though its not her fault, and has disobeyed Maxwell her android guardian. So Max has to tell the truth about her misbehaving.Trouble is, if he does, he will be  dismantled for failing on his job. S.B.K. Burns gives Kira lots of attitude and Max enough self-respect as they butt heads together through this light-hearted fantasy. A fun entry to the world of Goldens. .
