January 29, 1835 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Twenty-year-old Julienne Lane eagerly awaits the return of her fiancé and naval officer, Jack Arnaud, but she has not been idle. She and her best friend, Freeda Payne, have been working hard to support the abolitionist movement. Their efforts have been clouded in secrecy, but when Freeda shows up in Julienne’s cellar with a runaway slave, the need for secrets becomes imperative. When Jack returns home, will Julienne threaten his career in the Navy by including him in their plans, or will she hide news of the slave from him and put his trust to the test? Moreover, why does her fiancé appear to be hiding a secret of his own?

Despite a harrowing tour of duty in the North Atlantic, Jack’s hopes for rest and recuperation are put on hold. His wedding to Julienne is in two days, but a more pressing matter comes to his attention from his associates in the Culper Ring. Should he ask his beautiful fiancée to postpone the wedding for the third time in two years? How will he and the Culper Ring foil the malicious plans they have uncovered? And why does Julienne blush so brightly when he asks her about the cellar?

The clock is ticking. Danger looms. Can justice prevail? Will their love survive?

An excellent historical short. A HERO'S PROMISE (CULPER RING SERIES) is a free short story of 29 pages (minus front- and end-matter). The setting is January, 1835, Baltimore, Maryland. I've not yet read the Culper Ring Series, and I found this short story to stand alone with very little confusion. The premise is well explained in the book description/blurb. Kudos to the author for that clarity in the blurb as well as in this short story of 3 chapters of roughly 10 pages each. I enjoyed watching these two days unfold in the lives of lifelong sweethearts Jack and Julienne--"Lenna" who've been promised of their own accord since childhood. Lenna has always known Jack to keep his promises, to be a man of his word, honorable, trustworthy-- so when he arrives home (late) mere 2 days before their wedding, she understandably behaves a bit badly. The questions she raises of her beloved are well-motivated and I enjoyed discovering the main characters' personalities through their reactions. This short story is replete with themes of freedom and slavery, good vs. evil, secrets-- both justified and necessary, integrity, hope, and the ability of love to overcome all. This short *is* a romance in that we see Jack and Lenna come to terms with their doubts and commit to one another (again). Kudos to the author! I look forward to reading more by Roseanna M. White. Stand-alone historical novella. Finally, a novella that can stand on its own and still be a good (solid) short story! For once a novella didn't leave me frustrated by gaps or unknown motivations or an odd abrupt ending....so, like I said, a solid story in its own right. I'd like to say "ditto" to the review posted by Anonymous but signed by "Kristin" on May 12, 2014 on the plot and writing of this free novella.

I would have been disappointed if I had spent any money on the book. It did not make me want to spend the money on other books in the series. I wish I could put my finger on what was missing but there is something seriously lacking that makes this novella mediocre at best.
