Hope dangles by a silken thread.

Araneae Nation, Book 1

When the head of the Araneidae clan is found poisoned in her nest, her eldest daughter, Lourdes, becomes their clan's new maven. If her clan is to survive, she has but one choice: she must marry before her nest is seized. All she needs is a warrior fierce enough to protect her city and safeguard her clansmen. Such a male is Rhys the Cold.

Born the youngest son of an impoverished maven, the only things Rhys has to his name are his sword and his mercenary reputation. His clan is starving, but their fondness for the flesh of fellow Araneaeans makes them unwelcome dinner guests. Torn between loyalty to his clan and fascination with his future bride, Rhys's first taste of Lourdes threatens to melt the cold encasing his heart.

Amid the chaos of battle, Lourdes's sister disappears and is feared captured. Lourdes and Rhys pursue their enemies into the southlands, where they discover an odd plague ravaging southern clans as it travels north, to Erania. Determined to survive, Lourdes will discover whether she's worth her silk or if she's spun the thread by which her clan will hang.

Warning: This book contains one mercenary hero with a biting fetish, one determined heroine who gets nibbled, and an answer to the age-old question, "What does dragon taste like?" Matricide and sibling rivalry are available upon request. The house special is revenge, best served cold.

About the Author

Hailey is a small-town girl at heart. She’s lived most of her life surrounded by sprawling cotton fields and rolling pastures. Her desire to explore the world without leaving the comfort of home fueled her love of reading. Whenever life in the Deep South strikes her as too ordinary, she can be found with her nose stuck in a book—or glued to her Kindle’s screen—as she explores other worlds and cavorts with mythical creatures. She never imagined she would one day write her own adventures. Now she can’t imagine doing anything else.

Reading a blurb that leads you to believe the fantasy world holds arachnid-like humanoids sounds interesting and unique, right? I thought so too…and I was not disappointed. I couldn’t put it down! The book opens up to Lourdes fleeing her would-be captors following the sudden demise of her ruling parents and seeking the help of her mother’s best friend, who happens to rule the most feared clan in the region, reputed to be cannibals. Despite the age-old friendship, her rescuer insists Lourdes unite the clans formally before even securing Lourdes’s home. Finding herself in a situation with no better way out, she agrees. A man from a clan that is known to be poor and brutal marrying a woman from a clan that is known for its wealth and exquisitely spun silk, and this is expected to go smoothly? The rest of the story follows the aftermath of the siege and the journey of Lourdes and Rhys as they strive to grow comfortable with their arrangement. This creates a lot of delicious sexual tension. The book in its entirety is well written, with realistic intimacy that is detailed but fairly chaste, and enough violence to keep the conflict fresh without being graphic. My only complaint is the names of some people and most of the places. Some are easy enough, but I was pretty tongue tied trying to pronounce some of the names people sported and of places traveled. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Quite different than others out there. Reading a second time and enjoying it again

Wow. Despite the fact that I obviously thought this looked good from the descriptions, it really surprised me too. I thought both the MC's were very well developed. And Rhys was super hot in his small little gestures and kindnesses. Lourdes was strong, and while it's hard for us a lot of times to accept arranged marriages, she accepted her duty without doubt because it needed to be done. Really interesting world. Really quick read, although at 60 pages in I already felt like I had read a full-length book with how in-depth it was. Definitely recommended!

Great plot and a fantastic falling-in-love story. Great read for a free book, and little-to-no grammatical errors, which is always a relief!

This was the first book I have read by this author and I was in love with it right away! I had read some of the other reviews and thought that I'd give it a chance...well now I've read this one and the book after this one and I am headed to the bed to read the third one. I am an avid reader and read a LOT so I have come to admire good writing...but this is GREAT writing. I hope you will give this book a chance. I don't think you will be disappointed in the least. The author does a wonderful job of creating a whole new world that you can visualize in your head. My only drawback was reading the names of places and people but I quickly just started calling them whatever version seemed the easiest in my head. This in no way detracts from the story. So happy reading! I am a new devoted fan of Hailey Edwards!!!!

Great story for Lourdes and Rhys, but some parts/aspects of their world is not fully explained.

I can't remember the last book I read that gripped me from the start and refused to let me go. I laughed, I jumped, I wanted so desperately for..... heavens, just read it, you'll not soon regret it

I really enjoyed reading this book! At first I thought it would be too sci fi weird or something, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the story! It was different. The book sucked me in from the very first chapter!! On another note, the book has two explicit sex scenes that may not be appropriate for teens. I thought my daughter would enjoy reading the book too, but then I read the first sex scene and I thought no way would I let her read this. But that's just me.

I love this new world! The anatomy and talents of the people in this book are totally new and so refreshing after decades of vamp/were romances. This book has some problems with pace and I would have liked to see Lourdes put up more of a fight. That said, I still really enjoyed the book. I read the second book, and I have the 3rd on preorder. This series is not as in depth as the epic fantasy, Game of Thrones. However, the setting feels similar with the swords and warriors and class struggles. I recommend you give it a try!

This is a spicy new adventure that Fantasy fans will not want to miss! There are few creatures that capture the imagination quite like Dragons and Hailey Edwards uses it remarkably. The Dragons in this book are unique and full of life. I really enjoyed getting to know more about them. Aside from the awesome mythical creatures there is a ton of action in this book that had me on the edge of my seat. Swordplay is one the coolest battles to see or read about in my opinion and this book had some great scenes with Swordplay. I could practically hear the whistle of steal slicing through the air. Of course my favorite part is always the romance and the chemistry between Lourdes and Rhys is sizzling. These two really know how to heat things up! They also had a great connection that went beyond the physical and I could really believe that they were a perfect match. They complimented each other and seeing them fall in love was one of the best parts of this book! For an action adventure and a hero with a bit of a biting fetish look no further than “A Hint of Frost”.

While I admit that I probably would've fared better had I had a map of the clans or perhaps a glossary with my copy, I absolutely adored this story. Had it not been for the multiple instances where poor Lourdes' bosom was exposed to all and sundry, this would have been rated higher, but even with the abundance of that major pet peeve of mine, this was a very solid read. The originality of the universe Ms. Edwards has created along with the multi-faceted characters grabbed my attention and wouldn't let me go. I know it sounds cliche, but I quite literally couldn't put it down. Rhys is easily a favorite hero of mine, and the well-paced developing romance between him and Lourdes had just the right hint of steam. Recommended for fans of dangerous (yet awesome) heroes, headstrong heroines, and fantasy adventure with just a dash of heat. 4/5 Stars {This book was received, free of charge, from the author in exchange for an honest review. THIS IS WHAT I MEAN WHEN I SAY FANTASY ROMANCE, YA’LL. Romance novel in a fantasy setting. Why is that so hard to understand? I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to review this series. Bad, bad little blogger me. Regardless, I truly enjoyed this book. I don’t remember why I picked it up, I don’t remember what gave me the final push to hit “download.” I just remember this was a fun series and I read the first two books plus the prequel, then 30% or something on the third book…then what the hell happened? No idea. I’m going to go pick that third book up again, because I remember I loved this one. The plot: I was a little confused for the first few chapters—are Lourdes and Rhys temporarily married or what? Looking back, it was explained by Mab, so word of advice, pay attention to Mab. Just in general. She's hardcore. The story follows the romance novel arc very well while at the same tossing in monsters, venomous warriors, soulmates, and some truly original world building. I think the world building was one of the most remarkable aspects. I’ve never encountered spider-based paranormal creatures before and it was an exciting twist. The characters: Lourdes has that "duty" thing going on. Actually, both main characters do. And I love it. Despite that, she and Rhys have an attraction that teeters on insta-love, but I thought her reluctance compensated for it. The revelation about Rhys saving himself for his soulmate was what finally sold me on the book and launched it into the 5-star realm. I JUST LOVE THAT, OKAY. Yes, there were other characters, but who cares about them? Several have their own books. Yes, they’re great, but go read it yourself if you want to know. Geez. I thought this book was amazing and I really need to get back to reading the series. If you're like me, a sucker for unique worlds and “wait for marriage” heroes, you should, too.

Well...someone hid their light under a bushel. How have I never heard of this author? I read the reviews and was glad to find the freebies. They were the perfect introduction to a most wonderful author. I don't see this writing style changing. It's perfect. Am now going to purchase the whole series based on these 3 books. Her writing style is just as good as Grace Draven. Yesssss! Buy one, if you have a brain you won't be sorry.

Every now and then I want a change from contemporary or historical romance, and the buzz on this series was intriguing, so I bought the books for my own library.   Araneae Nation series by Hailey Edwards is a fantasy romance, which has a touch of everything you could hope for in that genre: action, compelling characters, humor and world-building that draws you in, being utterly unique but somehow familiar.    I’m so not a spider fan, but the arachnid-influenced features and some behaviors of the characters is well integrated and isn’t nearly as icky as it sounds.  Lourdes is instantly tasked with trials and tribulations with her parents’ poisoning and her ascension to the position of Maven.  Her clan, the Araneidae are a peaceful lot, but the world is not and with Lourdes as the Maven, she and her clan could fall prey to a more aggressive clan.  Rhys is the youngest son of another clan’s Maven, but his status and reputation are as Rhys the Cold, a mercenary for hire with a fierce demeanor and warrior’s reputation.  Maven is in need of his services to protect her clan, and a deal is struck: find and avenge her parents’ murder and marry, or remain and protect the clan, without a marriage.  Their relationship was intriguing, as the two start to rely on one another more frequently, the feelings and sexual tension amp up.  In the middle of everything, with Lourdes dealing with threats from everywhere and the possibility of more danger threatening her clan, her sister disappears and Rhys’ responsibilities and tasks have to adjust.  Gripping and intriguing, this story had me reading long after I expected to.   There were a few hiccups for me – while the characters were superbly developed, their particular ‘talents’ and clan associations were often difficult to fix in my mind, so many different and unique names, talents and associations that it took quite a while to get everything straight.  Edwards does a lovely job of introducing and explaining the differences, and it never feels like an info dump, but I did find myself a bit confused until all of the pieces fell into place.  While not a familiar genre for me, I am going to pick up the next in the series to see what happens. I purchased a copy of this title for my own library.  I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Reviewed by Terri N. Book provided by the author for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book From the first paragraph of this book I was pulled into this story and I didn’t want to put it down. Lourdes, the oldest daughter of her clan heads, is thrust into leadership after finding her parents murdered. I loved her spunk and strong will. She could have lay down and taken what life gave her a few times but she kept fighting for herself and her people. I appreciated the fact that even though things were really not idea for her she never lost her true self. I was in love with Rhys and them as a couple from their first scene together. The circumstances of his life made him real. The chemistry between Rhys and Lourdes was some of the best I’ve read. The sexual tension was out of this world……. literally. Speaking of worlds, Ms. Edwards is a master world maker. The landscape only made up part of this wonderful world. Mavens rule their clans, spinners spun fine silk from their finger tips and being hand-fasted included being bitten. I’ve always loved Native American stories and to me this is a Native American story with a fanciful twist. Some of the tribe names and places were hard to pronounce but I didn’t let that stop me for enjoying this read. The secondary characters were well rounded but didn’t overwhelm the reader. The story remained about Rhys and Lourdes while still developing interest in the other characters. I’m especially interested in learning more about Rhys’ brother, Vaughn. This is one fantasy world I can’t wait to visit again and I’m not just saying that because Ms. Edwards is a fellow Alabamian!

I found the story a little hard to follow in the beginning. It would have been easier if more of a back story was given about this world and its people /customs. Otherwise, it was a good read.

I am usually not one to enjoy the first person narrative. All the Is and Mys tend to become repetative. That being said, this book pushes passed all of those worries, with it's seamless, almost prose like writing. I couldn't put it down. Read this one. It's unique, intelligent, and even with the romance it skips the smut. Beautiful.
