The end of the last ice age gave one branch of the ape family the opportunity to cease being an animal living like an animal and become a human living like a human. They abandoned a solitary life for a group life, invented language, writing, and religion. The latter has given them hope and fear for tomorrow, and sometimes death in a fire while bound to a pole because of their heresy.
