This is a remarkable read for all ages. What an incredible true story of integrity and friendship. Richard Anderson and Gerald Pernell really hit their own home run with this one.

I bought this book as a gift for a young boy, but read it first to make sure it was age-appropriate. The story is inspirational, the illustrations are lovely, and the boy's parents tell me he is thrilled with the story.

While volunteering in a 3rd grade reading program, we introduced this book to a small group of children. Because the school is in Springfield, and very close to where the story takes place, we were fortunate to have Mr. Andersen come and read his book to our students. They quickly became engaged in the story and began asking many questions about race, sportsmanship and friendship. They learned that loyalty and friendship is more important than winning a medal. They also learned what it means to be a hero when the baseball team returns home to Springfield, Massachusetts to a Hero's Welcome in spite of never having played in the very big tournament in North Carolina. Why?? they didn't play will surprise many readers. This true story is a great tool for use in elementary schools to foster discussions about race, loyalty and friendship, and also that heros come in all shapes and sizes. Cudos to Mr. Andersen for bringing this beautifully written story to many young readers. Cudos also to Mr. Gerald Purnell for his amazing illustrations which jumped off each page and which made Bunny's life so real for our readers.
