Overview

A HOUSE DIVIDED

Life is close to perfect for the Reverend Curtis Black and his wife, Charlotte—except their son Matthew and his girlfriend, Racquel, are about to become parents at the tender age of eighteen. Even though Curtis and Charlotte wish Matthew could focus on Harvard instead of fatherhood, they are determined to welcome their new grandson with open arms. But for Charlotte, welcoming her future in-laws is another story. Try as she might, Charlotte can't stand Racquel's mother, Vanessa—and the feeling appears to be mutual.

When the tension between Charlotte and Vanessa finally erupts, the stress sends an already-fragile Racquel into early labor. Everyone is quick to blame Charlotte, including Matthew and Curtis. That her own husband would side with someone else infuriates Charlotte and strains the relationship they've only recently been able to repair. Her one ally is Racquel's father, but that brings problems of its own.

While Charlotte schemes against Vanessa, Curtis is consumed with his own concerns about Deliverance Outreach. A mysterious figure from his past has been sending Curtis cryptic messages threatening to take away Curtis's coveted position as senior pastor and destroy everything he has worked so hard for. But who could hate Curtis that much? And how can he fight an enemy he can't even name?

Times of trouble are descending upon the Black family in more ways than one. Will they be able to overcome their challenges and stand together against someone who could take it all away? Or is the Black family finally out of miracles?

Are You Ready for Some Drama? . If you know Rev. Curtis Black then you know this novel is full of drama which has you sitting still begging for more. Synopsis: Curtis and Charlotte’s son is on his way to becoming a father. Charlotte is stuck somewhere between--mad cause her son has been bamboozled by a young gold digging Jezebel and ecstatic because she gets to be mother to a newborn baby something she has wanted to do for quite some time. There is no one more capable of the task beside her husband Rev. Curtis Black. Vanessa and Charlotte are after each other one way or another arguing about everything from the baby’s name to the furniture for his nursery. After a very heated argument at the baby shower Racquel is rushed to the hospital and delivers the baby prematurely. Visitation is limited for Charlotte and even after the baby is released from the hospital. She then decides to take matters into her own hand with the help of an old friend to get custody of Baby Mj one way or the other. Will the Black Family be able to withstand the drama their family is going through this time or is it over as a first family for them? Or will they still even be a family at all? My Thoughts: This story brings back so many old sayings for me “What’s done in the dark will come to the light” and “What goes around comes around.” This was a great read and it left you wanting more! The issues in this book are well known for prior readers of the Reverend Curtis series. This was a Classic tale of “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” The disagreement over the baby's name and the nursery furniture also visitation between the families and so forth. I wanted the drama to begin in Chapter one but it wasn’t until about the third or fourth chapter that caught my “can’t put it down” attention.

A House Divided is the 10th installment in the Rev. Curtis Black series by Kimberla Lawson Roby and if you have been keeping up with this series you know that there is excitement and twists around every corner. Life seems to be repairing itself for the Black family since we were last here.  Curtis and Charlotte are doing well in their marriage after surviving yet another fiasco.  They are embarking on a new adventure in their lives – preparing for the birth of their first grandchild, and they couldn’t be more excited.  Matthew, Curtis and Charlotte’s son and his girlfriend Raquel are about to give birth to their baby boy and couldn’t be more happy and scared at the same time.  Matthew is continuing his education and away at Harvard while Raquel is home in Mitchell, IL, so the stress of being so far apart during this time is stressful enough without adding the stress that has already begun between Charlotte and Raquel’s mother Vanessa.  In typical Charlotte form she wants things her way, but she has run up on a mother that will not allow her to walk all over her or her daughter and we definitely see the explosion that is building within that situation. Curtis and his ministry at Deliverance Outreach are growing and doing great but when Curtis receives a anonymous letter from his past this worries Curtis.  Curtis is well aware of his past and what additional problems it may cause him and his family but if he could just figure out what this mystery person wants, maybe his skeletons won’t fall out of the closet, this time.  With the luck that the Black family has had with visitors from the past, Curtis just knows this could cause major problems for him. A House Divided is a very eventful read.  There are twists in there that make you speak out loud because you can’t believe that this just happened, but you definitely don’t want to stop reading until you get to the end ~ just remember to breathe because I found myself holding my breath when I got to certain parts!  Roby doesn’t disappoint with this installment, she keeps us on the edge of our seats with her strong story line and feisty characters that mesh so well together it is more like watching tv than reading a book.  I enjoy Roby’s work she is the continued professional and friend that is writing for US!  Keep up the great work, I look forward to more of your drama!
