English summary: This study offers a new interpretation of the contemporary French novel. Based on three novels by the much-discussed but sharply contrasting authors Jean Echenoz, Jean-Philippe Toussaint and Michel Houellebecq, it demonstrates that a true analysis of their literary work calls for a deeper interest in the various ethical and anthropological questions that they pose. However they also see the act of reading and writing itself as being of literary ethical significance, the success and failure of which is repeatedly discussed. What becomes apparent is that all three authors are in very different ways searching for traces of the novel's lost potential after its deconstruction in the 'nouveau roman' and in doing so revive it as a medium for surveying the 'condition humaine'. German description: Die vorliegende Studie bietet eine neuartige Lesart des franzosischen Gegenwartsromans an. So wird anhand dreier Romane der vieldiskutierten und doch sehr gegensatzlichen Autoren Jean Echenoz, Jean-Philippe Toussaint und Michel Houellebecq aufgezeigt, dass das Ergrunden ihres literarischen Projekts einer starkeren Hinwendung zu ihrem ethischen und anthropologischen Fragehorizont bedarf. Aber auch das Schreiben und Lesen selbst wird bei ihnen zu einem Akt literarischer Ethik, dessen Gelingen und Scheitern vielfach thematisiert wird. Offenbar wird hierbei, dass alle drei Autoren, wenn auch auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise, auf die Spurensuche nach verlorenen Potentialen der Gattung Roman gehen und ihn so, nach seiner Dekonstruktion im 'Nouveau Roman', als Medium einer Befragung der 'condition humaine' wiederbeleben.
