A Lady Never Lies by Juliana Gray

Lady Alexandra Morley, an alluring widow, is desperate to devise a plan to reverse her fortunes. When fate lands her in the arms of  Phineas "Finn" Burke, an attractive inventor, she despairs of ever getting what she needs...until they kiss.

Finn has always been impervious to the charms of the female species, intent only on perfecting his "horseless carriage" engine. He never dreamed he'd meet a woman like Alexandra, who is as stubborn as she is comely. Despite the brewing scandal, Finn longs to make Alexandra his wife, but he must first convince the maddening lady that their love is the only thing that matters.

About the Author

Juliana Gray began writing as a child to relieve the tedium of being sentenced to her room, and later turned to romance to relieve the tedium of unsatisfactory suitors. Sadly, despite five years' residence in the most exclusive areas of London, she never met a single duke, though she once shared a taxi with a future baron.
Juliana's debut romance trilogy, including A Lady Never Lies, A Gentleman Never Tells, and A Duke Never Yields, was largely written when she should have been sleeping. She enjoys dark chocolate, champagne and dinner parties, and despises all forms of exercise except one.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters had depth and feeling. It had me smiling on each page. The Great Cheese Insurrection - I know that you have no idea what I am talking about. But you can read the book to find out.

A wily British spy-master the Duke of Olympia has a hand in all of the action in the 3 books about the Penhallow men and the Harewood women. This first one, about the Duke's inventor son, Phineas Fizwilliam Burke and the impoverished dowager Lady Alexandra Morley is lively, funny and of course romantic. Led by Lady M, the Harewood ladies have rented a Tuscany villa for a year to get away from their troubles and coincidentally the Penhallow men have done the same. After an angry confrontation at the front gate of the villa, a truce is declared provided both sides keep clear of each other. Alexandra, motivated by wanting to come out from under a bad investment she has made in a motor company, secretly seeks out Finn in his workshop where he's putting an electric car together for an auto race. She's intrigued by the car and continues to sneak there to serve as his apprentice. The pull between the two cannot be denied. Lady M has the ear of the senior cook at the villa, Signorina Morini, who tries to get the two together, and Finn has the ear of the stable master, Giacomo, who tries to keep them apart. Who are these matchmaking/unmatchmaking Italians? Reading all the rule-breaking goings-on at the gorgeous villa is hilarious, and the finale - the auto competition - is rollicking.
