Overview

A Little Less Girl by Tess Oliver

Everything has always come easy to Jake West. But when Amy, the girl obsessed with him, commits suicide, the entire town of Raynesville is quick to blame Jake. Now Amy's cousin, Dani, has moved into town. And suddenly Jake has an obsession of his own.
Dani Spencer has always dreamed of a home and normal life. When her beloved cousin and grandmother die, her wild, impetuous mother inherits their house in Raynesville. With Amy's diary in hand, Dani intends on finding out what happened to her cousin. And there's an obvious place to start . . . Jake West, the guy who broke Amy's heart.

*Excerpt*

Dani stayed next to me. "He thinks you are the greatest person in the world."

"Actually, I think you've replaced me in that category," I said quietly.

"Not true."

I surrendered to my urge and turned to look at her. Our faces were close. I lost myself in her dark brown eyes. A slight breeze blew through the trees and dislodged a strand of hair from her pony tail. It fell across her cheek, and the end tickled the jagged scar on her chin. My breathing sped up. Her nearness was pushing on my chest like a lead blanket.

"Be careful not to hurt Blister," I said. "Things don't always go the way he wants. He takes stuff pretty hard."

"I would never hurt him."

"Why did you tell him that your scars were from a dog bite?"

"Maybe it wasn't a lie."

"People who've been bitten by a dog are generally pretty scared when a snarling one comes barreling at them."

She shrugged. "We all deal with our fears in a different way. Some of us prefer to confront them head on."

"That's bull."

"Not all of us grow up in a charmed life."

The loose strand waved over her lips and without thinking I reached up and brushed it off her face. My finger tips grazed her lips. She stared up at me with that same look of anger, hurt and confusion I'd seen before. Her mouth quivered as if she wanted to speak but couldn't. She didn't need to. I knew the question on her lips. Why'd you do it?

I dragged my gaze from hers. "It was five stupid words. Amy was never supposed to hear them." My thoughts finally broke free, words I'd wanted to say to Dani since she'd walked into class. "I had no idea she was behind me, or I never would have said it." My jaw clenched as I thought about that day. I'd been set up by my own friends. They knew Amy was standing nearby. "It was too late. She'd heard me and when I saw the hurt expression on her face, I wanted to throw my fist through a wall. It was one of those regretful moments in life you can't take back."

Dani was staring up at me. It was obvious she was assessing how much of my confession was the truth. But it was all true. "You were her romantic hero."

I looked away. "They only exist in books."

Love how this author shows 2 sides to everystory, including the cousin who died. It is a fantastic portrayal of humans who are not perfect and that we are all worth forgiving and loving no matter what we look like, or how much money we make. Each book I read of Tess Oliver's I wish that she had 20 more books under her name because you learn to love a little more with each one!

I highly recommend this book. Its a quick, easy read. I couldn't put this book down. I had to get it after reading the free sample. I was drawn into the story from the very first line and had to see how the story developed. I had to gind out what really happened to Amy and how Jake and Dani would get along.

This is a great book. It kept me going as an adult but had very little inappropriate content. I would allow my 13 and 15 year old to read it. No sex, very little cursing and great mystery/story line. I definately would suggest it. It is the cleanest book by Oliver that I have read. This book got me started reading Oliver's work, but this one I enjoyed the most due to the lack of inappropriate material.

This book was very good and well-written. The characters were fantastic and i fell in love with every single one. The plot line is completely original and i could not put the book down. There is only one badnthing i can say about the book. Dani's sole purpose was to figure out what really happened to amy. At the end when you figure out what happens, the plot feels very rushed. The author easily couldve elaborated and not all the ends were tied upsmoothly and effectively. Still a great book i wouldnreccomend to anyone. P.s. i saw someone ask if it was age appropriate for a twelve year old and the answer is absolutely. Light kissing and some mildly mature themes is about as bad as it gets. Im thirteen and read it.

Oh em geeeeee. This book was too amazing. I couldnt get enough of it. I would wait all day for school to end so that i could come home and curl up and continue reading! Can Jake be real, please? This book has so many twists in the plot, keeping you on edge while you make assumptions, have them be proven wrong, and then make more! I would recommend it to anyone. Tess Oliver did a nice job :)

This was my first read by Tess Oliver, but it isn't likely to be my last. I really enjoyed following Dani's efforts into uncovering the mystery of her cousin's death. While it was identified as a suicide, caused by cruel words murmured by the local heartthrob, Dani knew better. She and het mother moved to the town where her cousin died, which gave her the perfect opportunity to check out the locals and conduct her own investigation. The author weaves the life of Dani's mother in as the story develops, demonstrating the changes in their relationship which allows the reader to have evidence of the contrast of Dani's life before and after the move. And...what's a good whodunnit among high schoolers without some envy, a couple of love hits and misses, and serious drama?! Tess Oliver included enough of every element to keep it interesting. This page turner is appropriate for teens, but not so simple that adults are left wondering why on EARTH they chose to read it. TWO THUMBS UP

From the first word of the book to the last, I just knew that I would fall in love! I loved how the author, Tess Oliver, incorporated all the different emotions of all the people who had effected Dani's late cousin, Amy's, life. I also enjoyed the two sided story line, between Jake and Dani. But in the end, I have to say that my favorite part had to be the mystery in it all. Whether Amy really killed herself or was it caused because of someone else? Or just maybe the rumors are true and Jake was what caused Amy's life to end. I highly recomend this book because, you can't help but fall in love. <3 ;D BTW my name is Danielle.
