I have the pleasure of knowing Mr Hackenberger... Having his freindship and reading this book about his life as a young man has made such a great impression in my life...He is truly a remarkable man. This is a book I could not put down and yet I did not want to finish it. I will read it again and again... Thankyou Mr Hackenberger for sharing. Margie Schwartz

A very poignant account of a young German soldier's life being raised in Nazi Germany, serving in the war and as a POW. This book contains a horrific description of the atrocious conditions in an American-run POW camp and describes his life as a slave laborer for the French, years after all our GIs came home. A 'must read' for those interested in a new perspective of Nazi Germany and the war and for historians who think they know about all the war's significant occurrences.

The effects of WWII were widespread. The world was in shock over the treatment of the Jews by the Germans. But this man tells the store of what happened to the innocent German soldier who did as he was told, lost the war and was subjected to the horrors of the enemy. A very moving, thought provoking story. Emotional, and you cringe in horror at what man can do to man.
