Does heartbreak really make you stronger or does it simply make it impossible to resist her the second time around?
After losing a love as big as Texas, he's moved on...
After ten years in the military, Cal Maddox knows exactly what he wants: a quiet life in his hometown, a little piece of land, and the love of a good woman. Nothing on that list describes Delaney Shields, the woman who once jilted him. Now, she's back in town, and with one kiss, their past attraction flames from teenage infatuation to full-fledged lust.
...but she's back, sexier and sassier than ever...
Delaney never expects to see her first love, but a run-in with sexy-as-sin Cal sets off her craving for a second chance at the passion they once shared. Acting on those naughty fantasies would be disastrous, because she's not the sticking kind, and Cal has roots a mile deep.
...and they're both hiding heart-breaking secrets...
When Delaney is backed into a corner, her first instinct is to bolt. But with every kiss, every touch, she finds herself falling for the man she once believed was her soul mate. Will Cal be able to seduce his way back into her heart, or will her secrets from the past tear them apart for good?

Delaney is constantly running from her past. Her mother was always at her father's beck and call. She followed him and dragged her daughter with her until she abandoned her to Aunt Reylene. These memories still haunt Delaney. She will never be that type of mother which is why she ran from Cal and his dream of marriage and a family. Now she's back home to see his father, Whit. He needs her help to continue his work. Can she face staying in Prophecy and being the next Prophecy bootmaker? Delaney and Cal are both larger than life. They're still in love, but fear and distrust keep them apart. However, sparks fly when they are in the same room. Their romance is as red hot as is their desire for each other. I liked these two and wanted them to find happiness and a future. I loved the touch of magic that the bootmaking added to the story. These custom boots provide their owners with good fortune and a bright future. What a wonderful gift! This small town is filled with interesting and quirky characters. They add drama and humor to this romantic story. I was enthralled. A Love to Last is a page turner. I'm looking forward to more stories in the Prophecy of Love series. Kelsey Browning has down a wonderful job as always.
Don't you love it when your favorite authors can write stories outside of the ones that caused you to fall in love with their writing in the first place? Kelsey Browning does just that with A Love To Last, the first book in her Prophecy of Love series. While it is still a small town romance set in the south, it is much different than her Texas Nights Series or The Granny Series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wasn't sure what to expect of Browning's newest story. On one hand I was looking forward to another sassy, sexy fun contemporary romance, yet on the other hand I was looking for something a little different. A Love To Last satisfied both of those things for me. Cal and Delaney and the other characters in the story delivered the sassy quips that had me laughing yet there was a seriousness to the story and the characters that followed throughout. Delaney is a unique heroine. She has her mind made up (or so she thinks) about what she plans to do with her life and doesn't want anything (including emotions) to stand in her way. Cal proves to do just that. Her heart can't seem to stand up to him, the sexy cowboy she once dated years ago and who is now all grown up. Cal is still in love with Delaney after all these years away from her. Yet he also feels a sense of duty and obedience to his father and the town of Prophecy. He doesn't want things to get too complicated. Well... I was frustrated with both Cal and Delaney at times. They are attracted to one another and truly love one another but fought it so hard. I so badly wanted Delaney to just say yes, for Cal to stop holding back and for everything to fall into place! But that would probably be a boring story. So, I understood why Delaney made the choices she did. Fear drives people to do unexpected things and go against what their heart tells them. The romance between Cal and Delaney was spot on with their personalities and the intimate scenes in Browning's books are always hot. In A Love To Last, both Delaney and Cal both learn a lot about themselves and what love means. They learn that not all families are perfect, but you don't have to make the same mistakes of others. They learn that together they are stronger than on their own. It took them being away from each other and the town of Prophecy to see what they always knew - that this is where they are supposed to be both the town and in each other's hearts. The ending of the story was fantastic. It ties it all together, warms your heart and gives you that happy sigh. If you like contemporary romance, I highly recommend you give A Love To Last a try.
3.75 stars--A LOVE TO LAST is the first installment in Kelsey Browning’s contemporary, adult PROPHECY OF LOVE ‘slightly paranormal’ romance series. This is Delaney Shields, and Cal Maddox’s storyline. Told from dual third person perspectives (Cal and Delaney) A LOVE TO LAST focuses on second chances – a second chance at love for Cal and Delaney, and a second chance for Prophecy, Texas-a small town crumbling under the weight of financial debt and a dependency upon a prophetic boot maker whose own life isn’t long for this world. For several generations the Maddox family has been the ‘boot makers’ of legend: families would bring in their young children for a chance at a one of a kind leather book that prophesied their future. But Prophecy’s boot maker Whit Maddox is ill, and his replacement hasn’t been seen for close to ten years. Delaney Shields is Prophecy’s next boot maker (foretold by Whit Maddox himself) but Delaney left town years before in search of something else; something more than a prophesied boot maker; and a life that didn’t involve family and kids. But a return to Prophecy, Texas found Delaney pulled into the town’s emotional blackmail, and into the arms of the only man she has ever loved. What ensues is a rekindling of the relationship between Cal and Delaney, and Prophecy, Texas’s final attempts to breath life back into a dying town. The relationship between Cal and Delaney is one of lost love; about a woman afraid to destroy a man’s heart and soul because of her inability to stay in one place for too long. Delaney’s past is shrouded in betrayal and heartbreak; her parent’s need to run and follow the next big thing has caught Delaney in a nightmare of her own making, and she isn’t willing to add more heartbreak to an already dying town. Cal’s love for Delaney has never waivered; he has held on to the belief that Delaney is the only woman he will ever love. The $ex scenes are seductive and intimate without the use of erotic, graphic imagery. Now to backtrack: Delaney Shields is a drifter; a woman who cannot and will not remain in one place for very long. Her family history proves that she is incapable of commitment or falling in love. Delaney has booked a trip around the world, and with it she intends to leave all of Prophecy and the ‘prophecy’ behind. But with this comes attitude; a determination to run, and run fast; and a back and forth ideation about what it is she wants, and cannot have. She has told everyone she will not stay but Prophecy intends to tie down their prodigal daughter to keep their town alive and well. At times, Delaney is a difficult character to like or love; her need to escape doesn’t bode well for the people of Prophecy, Texas or the man who professes his love one last time. The world building focuses on the small town of Prophecy, Texas: the people, the shops, the gossip and the magic. The tale of a prophecy boot maker foretelling the future is the staple and backdrop to Prophecy’s livelihood (and the story) -without the boot maker, people no longer visit Prophecy and the town is slowly succumbing to its’ own death. But saying that the ‘prophecy/Prophecy’ repetition felt overwhelming-the constant reminders made this reader want to run, and run fast at several points in the story. A LOVE TO LAST is an interesting and entertaining storyline about betrayal and trust; letting go and moving forward; a slightly paranormal or ‘magical’ tale about a prophesied boot maker whose designs and crafts
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have to admit I did not love this book. The story is wonderful and the pace is great but the protagonist Delaney, well she just got on my nerves. That is just an issue I have with people apparently even fictional ones who just can not make up their minds about anything and commit. The love story in this one is sweet and well written. The back story about the boots and what they mean is really awesome and I learned a lot about boots that I never knew before. While Delaney has issues with committing to anything and sticking around, Cal is just the opposite, he is one of those guys you know you can trust and rely on, just out of the military and running his own business in his hometown where both his sister and father own their own businesses. The town really lives or dies based upon how his fathers boot making business is doing. His father is getting old and is not in the best of health, but still has not taken on a new apprentice. Enter Delaney, a woman who runs at the first hint that someone expects her to stick and commit to anything. Cal's father has decided that Delaney is just the one to take over his business trouble is she has other plans and has no intention of sticking around so the trick for Cal and his family will be to get Delaney to commit to staying and taking over the business before she gets spooked and runs away as fast as she can. Cal and Delaney were an item back when they were younger, but when Cal expressed his desire for marriage and a family Delaney took off without even saying goodbye. Cal and Delaney still have chemistry but Cal's sister does not think Cal should act on the chemistry because she is worried that Delaney will get spooked and run before they can get her to take over the boot making business. Delaney has a world trip planned and paid for. She doesn't want to stick around town and take over a business, she has the world to see, and buddy she likes to keep telling people where she would be right at that moment if she hadn't been tricked into sticking around town for a few extra days in order to visit with Cal's father once he is feeling better. Now mind you Cal's father treated Delaney like his own daughter, yet she begrudges the man a few days of her time. (see I have an issue with people like her even fictional ones.) Kelsey always writes such strong female leads I guess I found Delaney a bit whiny and selfish compared to her other leading ladies. I still give this one high ratings because the story is great, and the characters are very well written as evidenced by me being annoyed by the protagonist enough to want to smack her. This is still a 5 star read and yes I would buy this one for friends and family.
A Love to Last is the first book in Kelsey Browning’s Prophecy of Love Series. Delaney Shields has decided to take a trip of a life time but before leaving she stops in Prophecy, TX to visit Whit Maddox. Delaney has experienced a horrible childhood and Whit along with her Aunt Raylene were the only constants in her life acting as her mother and father. Whit is experiencing some health problems and wants to pass on his skills as the Prophecy Bootmaker to Delaney. She’s leery to make a permanent residence and add Whit’s son Cal to the mix and she wants to stay even less. Cal a former military man has recently returned to Prophecy and is trying to make a go of his own business. Delaney is forced to face her past relationship with Cal along with her childhood. Can Delaney learn to accept her childhood and move on to the next phase in her life as the Prophecy Bootmaker? A Love to Last is about second chances and learning to move on from a troubling past. It’s about reaching for a future that you never saw in your sights and its learning about putting your trust in someone. I enjoyed A Love to Last and look forward to the next book in the series. I’d like to disclose that I received an advanced copy of A Love to Last in exchange for a fair and honest review.
