Children's Literature
Here is the true story of a dog that traveled the world with the U. S. Mail from 1888 to 1896. A native of Albany, New York, this stray dog wandered into the Post Office looking for a warm place to spend the night. When he was discovered, he was 'adopted' by Owen, a postal worker, and the source of the dog's name. Animals were not permitted in the Post Office, but Owney won the heart of the supervisor, and became part of the team. He went everywhere with the postal workers, and one day boarded a rail car. His travels began on a run to New York City, but soon took him across the country, and he became a favorite. He received awards and decorations at many of the stops, which led to his meeting the Postmaster General, who proclaimed him the Official Mascot of the Rail Mail Service. Maps in the endpapers show his stops in the United States. In 1895, Owney spent 132 days traveling around the world by steamship and train. Watercolor and pencil illustrations and many maps combine to make an old fashioned feel. 2003, Great Plains Press, Ages 6 to 10.
