The coming of age story of a young Honduran girl, Dinora, who runs away from home and an abusive stepfather. Dinora makes her way to the sea, a place of comfort. It is when she arrives at Tela Bay that she is forced to realize, for her own safety, she must disguise herself as a boy.
Found on the beach by an old man and his sons, Ochee, a local shaman, takes Dinora in and teaches her the ways of the native people and the sea. Soon she learns to fish to feed herself.
