Reviewed by Michelle Robertson for Readers' Favorite A Midnight Song by C.L. Peck is an engaging children's fable that introduces young readers to travel, African culture, friendship, marine life, and legends. This plot is filled with exciting adventure, African cultural dances, music, and stories, as well as strong emotions of excitement, fear, self doubt, happiness, and sadness.  C.L. Peck has taken the great tradition of reading a bedtime story to a whole new level with A Midnight Song. The author tells a very charming tale of a young boy traveling with his parents around the world. The family stops in an African town and the young boy meets a young African girl and her uncle. The boy could never imagine how much he would learn and become a part of the African culture and life in just one night visit. The author opens up the imagination to all who read this tale. The story is written with such elegance, making it easily understood and read, and it is a page turner from cover to cover. The illustrations correlate very well with the text, as their colorful, very detailed appearance is excellent and child-friendly. A Midnight Song by C.L. Peck is a children's book that will be passed on through generations of mothers and fathers reading bedtime stories to their children. The author's plot allows for readers, young and old alike, to imagine experiencing a whole different lifestyle outside of their own. Very well done.

Love this book! Plop down on the bed with your child, start reading and join Sam on his exciting adventure. If you and your child love whales, this is the bedtime book for you. Such a cute, magical story! Very pretty, colorful illustrations on each right-hand page give your child a beautiful visual as you read the text on the left-hand pages. It's a longer story (but not so long that your child gets bored), so use a bookmark and pick up the story the next night. After a couple of years, when your kid is reading comfortably on his/her own, pull this book off the shelf and let them read it again themselves.

Wow! Absolutely love this story!!! This story takes you on a wonderful and mystical adventure along the beautiful South African Coast where a young boy learns that some of life's experiences can affect your entire life. Lifelong friendships are forged, both human and not human (whales). This story is my favorite because it truly opens up a child's mind and allows him/her an opportunity to look at the world through the eyes of another. Through this story my children have received the benefit of being able to travel to another part of the world from the comfort of our own home. Can't beat that airfare. hahahaha Even though the characters and story are fictional the author has chosen an actual town and real events to embellish and create her own twist and make believe world. Very engaging! But, most importantly, my children cannot get enough of this story!! Since my children are younger I break this story down into smaller sections for bedtime reading. It gives us all something to look forward to and what mom would turn down having their kids look forward to bedtime? The first time we read the entire story, each night as I closed the book we made a game out of trying to guess what will happen next. Too fun. And, the illustrations are phenomenal! They are bright, fun, and correlate perfectly with this unique story. My children would snuggle up next to me as I read engrossed in the pictures because there is a beautiful illustration for every page of text. Bottom Line: This story will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and your kids will not want you to put it down. I am going to buy this book as a Christmas gift for all the little people on my list. You will not be disappointed!
