Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Puritan Barnabas Horton still grieves the loss of his beloved wife, but he knows his two young sons need a mother. And yet these two very different people with very different expectations will take a leap of faith, wed, and then embark on a life-changing journey across the ocean to the Colonies. Along the way, each must learn to live in harmony, to wait on God, and to recognize true love where they least expect to find it.

This heartfelt tale of love and devotion is based on debut author Rebecca DeMarino's own ancestors, who came to Long Island in the mid-1600s to establish a life--and a legacy--in the New World.

I got so sick of Barnabus nagging Mary if she was pregnant and Mary whining that Barnabus didn't love her. It drags on and on for years through the whole book! I finally couldn't stand it and jumped ahead. The book is so repetitive. I don't understand all the great reviews.

A Place in His Heart was a great book by Rebecca Demarino. It demonstrates that love is possible after being rejected. The historical facts were in great detail and lent the reader to believe they were right there with the writer. The book was well-written and kept the reader on their toes. There was just the right amount of suspense, romance, family, and relationships to keep you entertained. I can not wait to read the next book of Rebecca's. I recieved this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Rebecca DeMarino has written a debut novel that you will enjoy. Mary Langton's father wants her to marry someone he feels is eligible and will make a good son. Barnabas has lost his wife and is left with two sons to raise alone. When Mary and Barnabas decide to wed, they have to convince her father that this is the right thing for them. Little does Mary know is that Barnabas is planning to move to the New World. She has to accept that she has been unable to have a baby, she is going to have to leave her father and sister behind. This is a historical romance set in the times when Puritans and Angelicans had religious differences. A lot of the British were moving to the New World to be able to practice their faith without retribution. The characters have their flaws, their faith is entwined in their lives, their love for family, friends and how making friends with the local Indians helps them to settle in this new wilderness. Love grows, there is conflict between the eldest son and his new step-mother. Mary wants nothing but to be a good wife and have the love of her husband, his sons and to have a baby. One son takes to Mary right away but the other gives her problems about accepting her. I received this book through Book Club Network and the publisher to read and to leave reviews. These are my opinions and were not solicited. I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to more novels by Rebecca DeMarino. She did a wonderful job on her debut novel.

This book could have been much better without seemingly every chapter referencing the waiting for a child to be born and Mary wanting him to love her. The rest of the book was a pleasant read.

A widower loses his beloved wife. He has two young sons to care for and a business to run. He is overwhelmed. Many of the women in town try to capture his attention. A young girl is opposed to the match her father is trying to make for her. The lonely widower is more appealing. They decide to marry, although he tells her he does not love her. Life becomes difficult and she doubts the wisdom of her choice. Does this sound familiar? Many stories are written in this storyline. The difference in A Place in His Heart, is that it is based on a true story of the author’s family. This story took place in the 1600s, when the New World is just being settled. Barney feels he must leave England for religious reasons and start anew on what becomes Long Island. He brings his new wife, Mary, and his two young sons. Life is hard, and Barney’s neglect of Mary makes life even harder. This is a very enlightening glimpse into life in the early settlement of New York. The characters are believable, although the reader may become frustrated with Barney before the resolution. Be sure to read the author’s notes at the back of the book to see how she traced her roots to the real Barnabas and Mary. I received this from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I love reading books with a unique setting or time period. Rebecca DeMarino nailed that with her debut novel, A Place in His Heart. After reading countless prairie romances (yes I like them, but…) it was refreshing to read a novel set in the early Colonial era. The historical detail is impeccable, and I could practically taste the foods she described. I can’t wait to read her next novel! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Incredible debut novel! I loved this story. There are no major attention grabbing moments. It is a simple, heartwarming tale of everyday family life in the 1600s. The characters are easy to connect with and very human. The conflicts that arise between them are common today as each person sees life from their own perspective. The descriptions of life and how a household was run during this time period were wonderful. They kept my attention just as much as the characters did. A fabulous job by debut author Rebecca DeMarino. When I found at the end that it is based on her ancestors I was even more intrigued by the story. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment in this family’s history. I received a free copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

A Place in His Heart by Rebecca DeMarino was absolutely wonderful. A story of a young woman named Mary who was left at the altar and disgraced. She longs to be marry for love. She is being pressured to marry the eligible son of a London milliner. She finds herself falling for a young baker, Barnabas Horton with two young sons who recently lost their mother. While he is still grieving he decides it is best to remarry for his two young son. He finds that he enjoys Mary's company and seeks to court her. As the story goes on, I laughed, anguish, cried, and felt sad for Mary. This was a well written novel that had my emotions on a roller coaster. This was the first for me to read a book about the lives in the late 1600's. I truly enjoyed this novel. I received this book from The Book Club network for my honest review.

Mary's greatest desire is to be loved but when push comes to shove she's willing to fight for the chance to marry a good and godly man and hope he learns to love again. Barnabas is devastated by the loss of his first wife and love of his life, Ann. He strives to do everything in his power to honor her memory and achieve the goals they shared. The fact that this beautiful story was inspired by the author's ancestors makes me love it even more. From the quiet life they live in England to their voyage across the Atlantic and finally carving out a foundation for generations to come in the colonies, this family pulled at my heartstrings and kept me glued to the pages chapter after chapter.

A Place in His Heart is the first tale in Rebecca DeMarino's series, The Southhold Chronicles. On the opening pages of this book, you meet Mary Langton. After being left at the alter, Mary desperately wants to find and marry a man who will love and be there for her. When Mary crosses paths with Barnabas Horton, a newly widowed man in her hometown, she sees him as a potential alternative to the man her father has planned for her to marry. Barnabas is also in need of a wife to help him raise his two young boys and he sees Mary as an answer to his prayer. You cannot help but wonder what will occur between these two when you see that Barnabas is still desperately in love with his fist wife! As you watch Barnabas, a Puritan, plan to take his family to America, the new world forming on the other side of the ocean, you know that there will be hard times ahead. It is interesting to get a glimpse of what America may have looked like in its first days as you watch Barnabas and Mary struggle to build a life together as they attempt to settle into both this new world and their marriage! Will Mary ever feel truly accepted by her husband? Will Barnabas ever be able to love his new wife? Hold on until the final pages to learn the answers to these questions!

Mary Langton is a strong, strong woman. I don't think I could have made it as long as she did with Barnabas. I admire her courage and strength. However, I can relate deeply to Barnabas and his feelings. I know what it's like to lose a spouse. Rebecca DeMarino perfectly captured the emotions and depth of grief in Barnabas. The character development was well penned. They grew in faith and love just the way I would have hoped for them to. There were parts of the story that lagged a little for me, but I was still kept engaged. My favorite part of the story was the note from the author. It was so cool to learn that part of the story stemmed from the actual legacy of the author's family. I also enjoyed how real the interaction between the Indians and the English felt. The struggles of life in the New World was not dulled down for story purposes. Overall, if you're looking for a story of faith, love, devotion, and live in the early America's, this is sthe story for you. *I recieved a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.*

A Place In His Heart : A Novel ( The Southold Chronicles - Volume ! ) By: Rebecca DeMarino A Place In His Heart is the first book in The Southold Chronicles series. I truly enjoyed this story and Rebecca DeMarino has did a fantastic job of penning her story and the characters. A Place In His Heart had me hooked from the start and I could hardly put it down till the end. Mary is a young lady who wants to only marry for love. Barnabas’s wife passed away and left him with two small boys to raise. Now he loved his wife dearly and cannot get over her and no one could ever replace her in his heart, but he needs someone to help raise his two boys. How does Mary feel about Barnabas knowing he cannot get over his dead wife? Will Mary want to leave her family and travel to another country with Barnabas and his sons? Mary is so sweet , but can she love and stay with someone who does not love her? Will Barnabas ever give his heart to Mary? This is a very heartwarming historical romance and at times I felt tears in my eyes. I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review, which I have given.

I found this an interesting book. A marriage of convenience so to speak. Mary knew Barnabas had just recently lost his wife. She knew that he cared for her but was still grieving his "perfect" wife but needed help with his two young children. I found the character's capable of bringing out some emotions. Mary trying to be everything a wife should be and Barnabas, caring but not giving Mary the one thing she needed most. I was always wanting to shake them both for one reason or another! I enjoyed the history and story of this family. Their faith, courage and the struggles of settling in a new land. The author brought it together in a believable story.. I want to thank the author and Revell Books for the gifted copy, I enjoyed this book..
