So often I'm disappointed in follow-up stories using the same characters - but not this time! J P Bowie has got me hooked on his novels of strong friendships and the forces of evil that continually try to tear them apart. Peter and Jeff, still crazy about each other, visit the friends Andrew and David in New York at Xmas. A murder happens, of course, and the festive season suddenly takes on a sinister note as Andrew is accused of the crime. Jeff, and a sympathetic NYPD detective set out to find the real killer, discovering in the process, a web of lies, deceit and treachery. Peter's psychic sense kicks in several time throughout the story, eventually leading them to the final denouement - as the good guys face off with the bad. If this sounds routine, believe me it's not. Every character rings true, and the plot, as it unwinds, builds to an exciting climax. I loved it!

This latest novel from J P Bowie had me sitting up late at night, loathe to put it down - what a story teller the guy is! Taking his two heroes, Peter Brandon and Jeff Stevens out of their Laguna Beach environment and setting them down in the Big Apple at Xmas visitng their buddies Andrew and David, was a great idea. We get to meet new characters as well as familiar ones - some of whom now seem to be this reader's old friends! Excellent character development is a strong point of Bowie's and he doesn't disappoint this time around. The loathsome Jeremy, and his paranoid wife Morgan, are just two of the well drawn players in this murder mystery. Add to the mix an unhappy cop looking for a life, who almost immediately ingratiates himself as a character you'd like to know more about (is he a regular now, JP?) Bowie's writing as always is upbeat and humorous, despite the element of danger and betrayal that surrounds the friends as they try to clear Andrew's name - and find the real murderer. The surprise twist is kept from us almost to the end and I kicked myself for not seing it coming! Great story! Can't wait for the next one.

I am really enjoying this series. I love how the author writes all kinds of mystery and intrigue but doesn't draw it out too long before moving on to the next step. These characters are great - sexy, entertaining and fascinating.

J.P.Bowie is rapidly becoming my favorite author of mysteries - his latest A Portrait of Andrew is another example of his fine writing style and sense of drama. I usually like to spin out my reading time over several days, but I could not put this one down! Peter and Jeff are two great characters - so well drawn you feel you know them (or would like to know them)well.I heartily recommend this book to all who love a good who-dun-it. It'll keep you guessing right through to the denoument - quite a surprise!
