t’s always a pleasure when I start a new series that has a good mix of action, romance, and interesting world building. In A PROMISE OF FIRE, book one in the Kingmaker series, Catalia has been living and working as a soothsayer in a circus far from her northern homeland hiding out from an evil queen in whose palace she was raised. She catches the attention of Griffin, known as Beta Sinta, who with his family conquered the southern province of Sinta that had been run by royals who cared nothing for their people except for the taxes the paid and forced labor provided. Cat has some very strong magical talent including being known as a Kingmaker; she can tell who is lying, but at a great physical cost. The warlord Griffin needs Cat as she is a powerful weapon to help retain his kingdom which has little magic so he takes her, and on the journey to his home, she discovers that though he is her captor, he has many commendable qualities. Cat is far more attracted to Griffin than she wants to admit; their verbal and physical sparing adds a lot of spice to the journey. This world is set within the background of Greek mythology with the gods and goddesses who control the destinies of magic and non-magic folk alike. Although Cat was raised in abysmal circumstances, she did not let that corrupt her soul, but she certainly has some resulting issues to deal with that affect having a relationship with Griffin. Cat has a lot of secrets and Griffin is determined to know them all. I have seen criticism that Cat is a “helpless heroine,” but I see her as a survivor who has to deal with extremely difficult situations in the past and continuing on to the present. Cat’s story needs to be viewed in the context of her world and society. She is clever, creative, and has a sassy mouth that adds to the fun. I very much enjoyed this tale of adventure, magic, and romance.

I was recommended this book from a friend and she was right. It was awesome. I read it in three days, but it only took that long because I had to work. It captured my attention and brought me into a new and creative world full of magic, god's, mythical creatures and powerful characters. I already pre-ordered the second novel. My only disappointment is that I have to wait until January to read it!

This was an interesting take on mythology. I don't usually like first person narrative but this was done very well. The action was plentiful and the dialog was witty. The romance part was slow to fully build but it fit.

This is an excellent boot, I enjoyed it so much that I bought the second book in the series halfway into the first one. I look forward to the final book in the series.

The world the author created is wonderful. There’s Greek Gods, magic, dragons, vengeful villains, Khal Drogo… I mean, sexy warlords named Griffin, and aside from Cat's very immature nature, this story has an amazing line-up of characters. I just really wish Cat wasn’t so freaking frustrating. I know that her banter is supposed to be amusing and funny but I really just wanted to strangle the girl. I hope the second book shows some character growth for her because she needs it.

Promise of Fire is one of those books that once you start reading it, you won’t be able to stop. The world that Bouchet has created is fascinating. Greek Gods, dragons, magic, and unforgettable characters – what more could I ask for? Cat and Griffin have become one of my favorite couples. The tension between these two had me rooting for them throughout the book. I guess what they have could be called EPIC. The secondary characters are just as likeable. I would find myself thinking of the team as “grinning idiots.” And I say this with love because what’s not to love when you have three warriors whose fierce loyalty goes beyond anything that Cat has ever experienced. Cat’s world is brutal and has made her stronger for it. She’s fierce - one of the things that I love about my heroines. I can only imagine what book 2 has in store for the Beta Team. I’m thinking it’s about to go down for Cat and she’s going to have to face her past head on and I’m dreading the outcome. But who knows, she’s like a cat with nine lives. I’m ready to dive into the next book right now.

I am apparently one of the few who didn't like this book. I bought it on a recommendation from NPR, and was so disappointed in my choice, I nearly stopped reading the book in the middle, which is something that I never do, no matter how bad a book is. My main gripe with the book (spoilers on the way!) is that the writing is just so bad. Character development? Ha! The heroine's actual personality did not follow from her supposed background in the slightest. Where she ought to have been cool-headed and wiser than her years due to severe childhood trauma and constant evasion of those who would seek to capture her, she was instead hot-headed and weak, not thinking through her actions, like, ever. Instead of behaving with wisdom, she was whiny and petulant. And how many times must we be told that her body was hot for the male lead? We get it. Really. We don't need to be reminded on nearly every page. The male lead had so much potential, but we learn next to nothing about him despite the heroine spending over a month literally tied to him with a magical rope. This made the relationship between them just ridiculous. No one falls in love with someone they don't know anything about, especially the READER! The worst part was that all of this clichéd, superficial tripe detracted from what was actually a pretty decent plot line. It had so much potential.

Fantasy romance is usually hit or miss with me, I love series that are complete and where the heroine and hero are the main focus of the plotline. It is their epic journey together that makes the story flow. It’s a very talented author to create a fantasy world wherein the action, magical elements, and characters are fully integrated into believable world building, My favorite writers of this genre are Bujold's "Sharing Knife" series, Nalini Singh’s “Psy-Changeling” series, and C.L. Wilson's "Tairen Soul” books. I can now count Amanda Bouchet among these gold standard authors. I was mesmerized and enthrall with “A Promise of Fire.” I love mythology and Bouchet’s has constructed a very unique perspective with blending Greek mythology within this story. The main leads, Catalia and Griffin were wonderful together, an ultimate power couple. Cat was total a kick-but heroine, knife throwing is her specialty. Yet she is also compassionate and vulnerable, especially in her interactions with Griffin’s loving, close-knit family who embrace Cat unconditionally. Bouchet has created a well-rounded, likeable, humorous character in Cat. Many of her first-person POV’s were laugh-out loud funny. Warlord and Beta Sinta, Griffin is wonderful and protective hero. He is without question a ruthless conqueror, but in Cat he sees his destiny and for him, there is no other. "A Promise of Fire" pulled me in from the very first page and it was such a thrilling, fascinating journey through Cat and Griffin’s world. I also fell in love with Cat’s “reluctantly adopted” Beta team…Flynn, Carver, and Kato. Griffin’s family was wonderful, I could imagine myself sitting at their dinner table and basking in their company. This book was a gem and a rare find with so much junk circulating in the literary world. I am happy and relieved that I took a chance on this first book in the series. I have already pre-ordered the second book and I really hope that the authors follow up with a powerful trilogy. I would love to add Bouchet to my very miniscule auto-buy list of authors.
