Ingrid Larsen, a young Swedish immigrant, arrives in Michigan in 1871 to search for her brother who has disappeared into the woods to work the dangerous lumber camps. Destitute and barely hanging on to hope, she encounters a newly-widowed farmer who is struggling to raise five children on his own. Marriage would solve both of their problems, and so Ingrid proposes to a man she barely knows. She will fight to protect her new family--but the hardest battle of all will be winning the heart of her new husband.

Readers who loved The Measure of Katie Calloway will be pleased to find more of Miller's emotive and descriptive writing here--and to discover that love is more than words.

Such an amazing book. I think it rates at the top of the books I've read this year. I Loved, Loved, Loved it. Serena B. Miller has out done herself with this wonderful, page turning read. Ingrid Larsen has arrived in 1870's Michigan with hardly any possessions. When a chance meeting with Joshua Hunter, while she is being beaten with a whip, is about to change her entire life. Joshua has his own problems, he has just lost the love of his life, his wife and mother of his 5 children. His In-Laws have accused him of murder? If he is able to convince the judge that he was not responsible for his wife's death, will he be able to raise his children alone, and keep up with the farm? Ingrid has come to America to meet her twin Hans, but she has not heard from him. She doesn't know what she will do, now that she has left the employment of the woman who was beating her. There is a blessing out there by the name of Hazel, and her She-Wolf dog. There are many struggles ahead for these people, but there is a lot of love and compassion shown. Especially by Ingrid, loved her reaction and acceptance of the children, and Mary. She loves the Lord, and shows it in her actions. If you only read one book...read this one! It is GREAT! I received this book from the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.

Loved this book. Ingrid is such an amazing character. You cant help but love her. She marries a widower with five children just so he can keep his family. She has the daunting task of proving herself a good wife and mother to a man still in love with his dead wife. The children are immediatly taken with her. But can her husband ever come to care for her? There are a lot of adventure and suspence throughout this book that was unexpected but interesting and entertaining. Overall I absolutely loved this book. And being from the area that this story takes place it made it even more interesting. I learned a lot of things about the Bay City, Saginaw, thumb area that I really didnt know anything about. Great book!

Everything was great about this story: characters, setting, time period, and emotional pull. I'm not a fast reader but I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen next!

This book was, ok.  I found some of the dialogue, especially involving the children slightly unbelievable...and overall did not find this book to be quite as amazing as the other reviewers proclaimed.  Decent book to pass the time with, but definitely not a "must read again" book.

Strong character development and plot make this a must read for lovers of historical romance. The well researched basis for the story is clearly evident in the details of the plot. The reader quickly has empathy for Ingrid and cheer her on in her quest for happiness. The story ties in to characters from Miller's "The Measure of Katie Calloway" but can also stand on its own.

Grabs your attention at first but grows tiresome towards the middle and end.

This was a deep book that touched on some gritty subjects. SPOILER: Serena explores the little discussed use of products intended to end a pregnancy. She has a hero still in love with his very flawed deceased wife as Ingrid, a Swedish girl searching for her brother in the lumber camps, arrives in town. In this marriage of convenience she puts up with a lot of nonsense including verbal abuse from the deceased woman's mother.  There is a charming secondary character who imparts godly wisdom. You'll be rooting for Ingrid all the way through. She's a gutsy heroine.

My sister gifted this book to my Nook, because she had read it and said it was one of the best books she'd read in a long time and didn't want me to miss it. At 251 pages on my Nook, it grabbed me from the very beginning and never let go. It was wonderful getting to know each character, to watch their relationships develop, and to see the strength of Ingrid never falter. There were hardships and challenges, and there was even a bit of a mystery here and there, a touch of humor when appropriate, a sweet and unexpected love story unfolding, and enough faith sprinkled throughout to make this book a real gem! Hats off to Serena B. Miller!

This is an exciting and skillfully written book! A Promise to Love begins with a tragedy and the action rolls on through the rest of the book. There are numerous twists and turns, so something of importance happens with each new scene. The main characters sidle off the page and into your heart and mind. Ingrid is a wonderful, caring and strong woman, who depends on her faith to carry her through life. I particularly enjoy the way love comes as naturally to her as smiling. Of course, she isn’t perfect, which makes her even more endearing. Joshua, the ex-military man and captain, is the kind of flawed hero that readers love to cheer on. His emotion and loyalty sometimes interfere with his good sense. Several interesting, secondary characters, with strong personalities or distinctive quirks, also add richness to the story. I love the historical aspects to this book and how the author was able to weave history around and through her story. A Promise to Love is a book hard to put down, before the last page is turned. It is an extraordinarily good, historical fiction novel.

I thought this book was great!I love this author! Now I have read 4 of her books and if I could rate them a 10 I would. The only thing I would do is read the book "The Measure of Katie Calloway" first because there is a bit of the book that talks about a few of the characters that were in that book. Even if you don't it is a stand alone book and it will just make you want to read the other book. If you love romance and a book with wonderful characters you will love this book. It is a keeper.
