A treasure lost...
American Sara Whately came to England with a single goal: recover a long-lost family treasure. Her father had long ago renounced his title and abandoned his country, but desperate financial straits call for desperate measures. Gaining access won't be easy. The jewels are hidden on an estate Sara's grandfather lost long ago in an unlucky turn of the cards. And then there's the vexing, villainous, valiant Viscount Reath...
A jewel of a woman...
Sinclair Stratton, Lord Reath has always gotten everything he wants--money, privilege, and woman. But after ten years in India, he's returned to England, ready to make amends for his youthful follies. He plans to return his ill-gotten estate to its rightful owner, but the man is impossible to find. And despite still being one of the most sought after rakes in town, the bold American beauty he keeps encountering seems to be immune to his charms and dashing good looks.
While Sara has promised to not just search for her grandfather's jewels, but make an attempt at fitting into society, it might just be that Viscount Reath is the treasure she actually needs.

Hmmmm... I am not sure about the premise of this story... a young American colonist girl comes to London at her aunt's behest. She has her own agenda... to find the treasure lost when her grandfather gambled away the fmily's estate. The problem I have is that in her Americanism she has lost her common sense. She conducts herself as a self-absorbed girl of today. She has no modesty or any concept of polite society. She abuses the trust of her aunt and their inability to convey the mores if society made me believe that she is an idiot. Luckily the gentleman of the story has better morals, and common sense than the heroines!!!

While A Rake's Reward has a unique twist it suffers from poor editing. Attention to detail is important, as is knowing the difference between a cook and a French chef, and a butler and a caretaker. Knowing the way servants were trained - footmen would not look disparagingly at those they served, chambermaid's faces and clothes wouldn't be covered in coal dust and they would wear uniforms not their own clothes - is important for coherent writing. What kind of parents give an eight year old a pearl handle pistol? Then seemingly don't bother with instruction for safety. Here is a mistake often made. Drapes are hung. People are hanged. Sara is both likable and frustrating. She lets whatever inappropriate words fly from her mouth without thought. Even though she was eight when her mother died she would have been taught proper behavior in this time. She states that she cared for the household from that time. She would have had to curb her temper and words to do so. Reath is trying to do the right thing. No mention of why his letters go unanswered. He saves Sara time and again from social or physical danger.

Good story. Plot flows very well. Wished it could have gone on just a bit more so we knew what happened in the end.

Though I could only make it through 137. Bad decisions about, to many grammatical errors, and a weak story made this one impossible for me to finish

I enjoyed the story very much. Characters were fleshed out well. I loved the banter between the story headliners, no worries on not enjoying this one.

A Rake's Reward by Meredith Bond is a fun historical romance. Ms Bond has delivered a well written book with lovable characters. She added drama, a bit of suspense, humor and steam to make an entertaining read. I enjoyed A Rake's Reward and would be happy to read more from Meredith Bond in the future. A Rake's Reward is book 2 of the Merry Men Quartet Series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
