For POB's Aubrey/Maturin readers, this is really a 'must own' if you already enjoy the stories and want to savor the full depth of the world POB's portrayed. As an added bonus, I also found it usefull when I read 'A Passage to India'. The book first covers some basic background information about the ships and the RN for the time period. The rest of the book is a glossary of nautical terms, animals, places, people, foreign phrases, etc. that are used in the series. Though it's not exhaustive, it has so far not let me down on any unusal term I've looked up.

Dictionary-format companion to the Aubrey-Maturin novels. A great resource for everything from nautical terms to French and Latin phrases.

An outstanding guide to the Aubrey-Maturin series and other Age of Nelson fiction.
