"I've read a few books marketed for middle-grades or younger this year and I have to say that this is hands down the best suited for those ages. It has a great plot, some truly well-rounded characters (with more depth than what I find in most adult novels these days) and a climax that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Not only was this book highly entertaining but there are some great messages in it." - LitChick Hit List

The second book in the Big Honey Dog Mysteries series is even better than the first! Honey and many of her neighborhood canine friends end up at a dog show Honey’s human is in charge of photographing. There are pedigreed dogs everywhere and all are eager to win BUT there are rumors that the dog show is haunted. Howls followed by darkness and disaster seem to plague the event leaving Honey and her friends eager to find out who or what is behind all of the trouble. Once again Ms. Hanna brings in ideas that will help the reader to learn and grow while reading. Some of the issues brought up include cheating, rumor mongering, winning, sportsmanship, friendship, jealousy, overcoming disaster, friendship, doing one’s best, learning from mistakes - life issues we all need to come to terms with so we can learn to be the best we can be. Thank you to the author for a copy of this book to read and review.
Though intended for children, this cozy mystery can be enjoyed by all ages. I especially enjoyed the book. It's a fun, fast-paced read and I think it's perfect for children in the 9 to 12 range. If your child loves dogs, they'll love this book. Best of all, it's a book that you and your family can enjoy together at bedtime. But, like I mentioned above, this book is not just for children. I'm 30 and thought it was great.
Honey Dog is back in another mystery, this time it's set at a Dog Show where Olivia (Honey's human) has been hired as the official photographer. The venue is local (beside a fairground) so several of Honey's friends are there as well - Suka the Husky is competing, Biscuit the Beagle is there because his owner is Secretary of the Beagle Club, and Ruffster the mongrel whose owner is the electrician on site. They're all as compelling (and believable) as in the first mystery in this series. And then we have the competitors - a very snooty Afghan hound and his friendly but insecure sister, a beautiful French poodle, a terribly pampered and cocksure little Cocker Spaniel, and a Great Dane who is the spitting image of Honey. This last fact leads into Honey competing in the ring, but you'll have to read the book to find out why! This excellent book has Honey and her friends piecing together clues to solve a mystery, or is that two mysteries? Well, we have a ghost, we have a terrible fire in the showgrounds ten years ago, we have dogs jumping to conclusions, we have a little romance, we have great escapes, we have terrible accidents happening to the most promising contenders for Best in Show ..... It's an exciting read for children (and their parents and grandparents), and has some fun puns (e.g. "that was pawsome!") and great descriptive passages: Honey put her head down against the rain and started making her way across, trying her best to avoid stepping into the puddles. As she got closer, she realised that the Viking ship was swaying wildly in the wind. The chains that attached it to the massive triangular stand were rattling as it swung first to one side, then to the other, as if riding the swell of an invisible wave. The wind buffeting the ragged sail made it look even more like a ship tossing at sea. Honey could hear the wooden body of the vessel creaking and groaning as it shuddered under the force of the wind. I can't wait for my grandchildren to be a little older and reading these books on their own!
