A Soh It Goh! by Joelle Cohen Wright

A Soh it Goh! is a collection of character-driven sketches that broadly represents the humorous side of Jamaicans as they go about their daily lives on the island. While narrated in English, the book's characters speak in rich Jamaica patois that adds an entertaining and comical dimension to the stories.

The stories are sure to send readers into fits of laughter as the colorful characteristics of the Jamaican people come to life on these pages. A Soh it Goh! illustrates ways in which Jamaicans partake in playful banter and engage in contentious disputes all the while exploring the unique style of verbal expressions Jamaicans use to communicate their assertive personalities - not to mention their brazen, take-no-prisoners attitude.

I was first acquainted with this author's comedy from a reading of this  book at my cousin's Christmas party. There were about 30+ people sitting  and my cousin read  a few of Joelle's skits. It took some time to finally get through because as she read family members and friends kept falling out of chairs and sofas to whoops of laughter. It made for a great time. Some months later I purchased the entire series of the author's books. I got into reading each skit voicing the multiple characters' voices. I laughed so much that it took me forever to complete the book. I re-read sections to tears and howls of laughter. Ms. Cohen Wright is a comedic genius! She captures the true essence and many flavours  of the various nuances, speech patterns and  lives of the Jamaica I know and remember. It took me some time to finish reading the entire series as I wanted to savour each story. I want more! Notes of warning: 1. Do not lend these books to friends or family for they will NEVER be returned. Purchase additional copies.  2. Do not eat or drink whilst reading. You WILL choke.  3. Never read this book if you have diarrhea. Laffing and puhping  (laughing and expelling gas) concurrently will lead to embarrassment if you are in a crowd; and to more laffing and puhping if you are alone. You have been warned!

This book should come with a warning: "Not for consumption in public places." I started reading this book while on a flight and did not hear any of the connecting flight announcements. The other passengers eyed me suspiciously as I was too engulfed in the "Mix Up & Blenda Series" to even notice the beverages being served. I felt like I was on vacation in Jamaica and walking down memory lane. The stories are hilarious; My laughing was hysterical. I laughed until I cried. I had a hard time finding my way around the airport. I kept looking for "Yaad Dog and Farrin Dog." I almost missed my flight, but I would do the same thing all over again. I am impatiently waiting for the next one in the series.

This book is great. Joelle does an excellent job of capturing the humorous, as well as the not-so-humorous, aspects of Jamaican life in the most hilarious ways. I laughed so hard that I cried throughout most of the book.
