Love and suspense with a dash of Southern Gothic... Rachel Sevier, a lonely thirty-two year old inventory specialist, travels to Wynnedower Mansion in Virginia to find her brother who has stopped returning her calls. Instead, she finds Jack Wynne, the mansion's bad-tempered owner. He isn't happy to meet her. When her brother took off without notice, he left Jack in a lurch. Jack has his own plans. He's tired of being responsible for everyone and everything. He wants to shake those obligations, including the old mansion. The last thing he needs is another complication, but he allows Rachel to stay while she waits for her brother to return. At Wynnedower, Rachel becomes curious about the house and its owner. If rumors are true, the means to save Wynnedower Mansion from demolition are hidden within its walls, but the other inhabitants of Wynnedower have agendas, too. Not only may Wynnedower's treasure be stolen, but also the life of its arrogant master, unless Rachel can save them.

Beauty and the Beast meets mystery novel! I loved this book! It is Beauty and the Beast meets mystery novel! The story slowly drew me in and then there were so many questions that needed answering, mysteries that needed solving. I kept coming back to the book, I NEEDED to know what the answers were! Were there ghosts in the mansion? Did someone take Rachel's brother against his will? Who is Jack really? Who can Rachel trust? Is there really treasure hidden in Wynnedower? You will fall in love with Rachel as she tries to answer all of these questions and more! Sit down and relax, because once you start reading this book, you won't be going anywhere for awhile! Five stars for a captivating read! I received a copy of this book for free.

Reviewed by Judy Book provided by the author for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book Shades of Nancy Drew and The Hidden Staircase! Shades of the evil Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca! Shades of Jane Eyre and locked rooms and mysterious shadows and the glowering Mr. Rochester! Rachel Sevier exhibits just the right touch of post-tragedy reclusiveness, stubborn independent pride and melting womanhood. Jack Wynne, tight-lipped and possessive of the old family home–and the secret he hides behind its walls–is the perfect foil. Enter the mysterious stranger David Kilmer who speaks of unrequited love, and the dour housekeeper who would rather not speak to Rachel at all. Throw into the mix others who come and go–but for what purposes and with what motives? Wynnedower is crumbling, falling prey to the elements and to looters who are more than just petty thieves. Rachel vacillates between wanting to see it renovated and not caring if it’s bulldozed. David just locks himself in the dining room and denies any possibility for the house’s ultimate redemption.  But together they uncover options never dreamed of, and they must learn to trust each other if a resolution is ever to be found. A good mystery sans shock-value language and with just the right dash of romance is hard to find–but you’ll find it in A Stranger in Wynnedower. If you’ve read any of the above-mentioned books and loved them as this reviewer has done, you’ll buy into Grace Green’s romantic suspense from beginning to end. Favorite Quote: He cast those dark, yet warm eyes upon her and reeled her in over a plate of ravioli.

I didn't want this book to end! I wanted to stay at Wynnedower and continue to be a part of Rachel and Jack's lives! This story completely hooked me from the beginning when Rachel is staring at "the monstrous stone house," Wynnedower, after following her brother's directions to "drive until the trees crowd in close and the road looks like it's about to end, then keep driving." Wynnedower is a rambling, rundown old mansion with locked doors, forbidden rooms, mysterious people who come and go, and a sexy, enigmatic owner who advises Rachel to, "Lock the door and keep it locked. If you hear noises in the night, ignore them." The story has the gothic allure of a Daphne du Maurier novel but with twenty-first century characters. Rachel is a modern heroine, a strong, complex woman who can take care of herself. Jack is inscrutable but a real person, and the attraction between the two of them is powerful and compelling. The description of that attraction is subtle and understated...and completely believable. I felt Rachel's emotions, her growing attraction to a man she doesn't completely understand and doesn't always like, felt those emotions and her happiness, confusion, pain... I won't give away any of the secrets...and there are plenty of them...but suffice to say, once you start reading this book, you won't be able to put it down.
