Overview

Carrie and her little brother, Jay, find a wounded soldier on their land after a battle which later became known as "The Battle Above the Clouds." Adam, a Union soldier, has been shot twice in the arm. Though Carrie is reluctant to take Adam to their cave where her family hides their livestock from both armies, she cannot turn her back on him.

But her Aunt Lavinia, bitter over what Yankees have done to their land, urges Carrie to allow Adam to die. Carrie refuses, but cannot remove the bullets. Adam's friendship with Jay softens her heart toward him. It's not long until his gratitude and teasing manner spark a friendship between the young couple. Even though Carrie's father fights for the Confederacy in far-off Virginia, her feelings for the handsome young soldier begin to blossom into love.

When Adam's condition worsens, Carrie knows a Union surgeon is needed to save his life. How can she accomplish this and keep her family's hiding place a secret?

Carrie has had enough of this war. She, her little brother, and her aunt have been living in a cave to protect the last of their possessions from both the U.S. and Confederate armies. Still, Carrie is determined to help Adam, the badly wounded Union soldier she finds and befriends. But doing so may pose a threat to her family in A Stranger on My Land by author Sandra Merville Hart. I'd been aware of this book's existence for some time but never dug for information on it, so when I received a copy, I was surprised to find it's a novella. It turns out that this story is a good novella-sized fit. Even with its war theme, it's rather easy reading that I enjoyed. I did find the way a little bumpy in places, with sentences that seemed misworded. The relationship development feels a tad rushed or underdone, as does the story's ending, which introduces a new character on, literally, the last page--way too late to care about him or to add the extra, powerful punch that was apparently intended. But the story also has a nice level of tension and poignancy. When is your "enemy" not your enemy? If the things you pray for don't happen, does that mean you're bad at praying? I appreciate how the author touches on serious matters like these with simplicity and grace. I'd recommend this novella to other fans of Christian historical fiction, and I'd be happy to read this author again. ________________ I received a complimentary copy of this book, for which I've given an honest review, through a giveaway.

This intriguing historical is an easy-to-read romance set on a beautiful Tennessee mountain in 1863. As you can imagine, dangerous secrets and forbidden feelings between a Yankee soldier and a Confederate’s daughter set the stage for an entertaining read. The characters were sweet and the setting vivid; however, I had a difficult time really connecting to the story. Believe me, I really wanted to. It was just a little too short of a novella for me. There were a few too many cases where I felt the emotions of the characters were being told to me rather than being shown. I liked the characters, but they didn’t exactly seem to grow and change much through the story to me. I wish there’d been a bit more time to get fully invested in the characters and their various dilemmas. Despite its predictable parts, A Stranger On my Land is still a sweet story of young love, trust, and second chances. I appreciated the historical details and I’m eager now to learn more about “The Battle Above the Clouds”. Thank you to Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas and Meaghan Burnett for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the way the author Sandra Merville Hart, describes the surroundings in such detail.   With her descriptions of the cave, the battles, and the mountains, I felt as though I was taken back in time.   She then gives you a romance story that will keep you flipping pages to find out the end. Carrie speaks to me with her strength, her insecurities, her anger, and her protectiveness of her family.  Everything you would go through if you were left in charge at a young age during the war.A great read! This books was given to me in exchange for my honest review.

This is a beautiful story amid the horrors and bloodshed of the Civil War. A Southern young woman discovers a wounded Union soldier and helps him to her family’s hiding place. Against her aunt’s protests, Carrie feeds the soldier and hopes she can help him to regain his strength. Can Carrie, whose father is a Confederate soldier fighting in Virginia, really be attracted to the wounded Yankee soldier? Vivid descriptions of the waging war at Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Strong characterizations.

Hart's research helps her add details that put you into the middle of the fighting and the aftermath. Both sides are suffering in this tale set on the fringes of the Battle of Lookout Mountain. Carrie and Adam are the kind of characters that you'd want to spend time with long after the story is finished. I can see a series following Carrie's little brother, Jay.  Although is this a romance, Hart doesn't filter the effects of war. Through her wonderful descriptions, you feel the cold chill of the Tennessee morning and the dampness of the cave where they live. If you love historical romance, especially those set in the Civil War, you'll love A Stranger On My Land.

A Stranger On My Land by Sandra Melville Hart  This book is a captivating novel about people on both sides of the Civil War.  How people’s knowledge of the unknown and their emotions skew their thoughts of others on both sides of the war.   Carrie uses the teaching of her mother to remind her that, even if the hurt soldier, Adam, is the enemy, he is also a human and she can’t let him suffer and die.  How getting to know each other shows they may be more alike than they ever imagined and they struggle with same feelings and situations of the war.   The descriptions of the area and the characters made me feel like I was right there beside them.  I read many historical fiction stories and enjoyed this one tremendously. I suggest you give it a try.

I thoroughly enjoyed, A Stranger On My Land I’m a guy, and you won’t find me shopping the romance section of bookstores. However, I’m also and author, and when a fellow author asks for help launching a book, especially a first book, I’ll do what I can to help. I was given a copy with the condition that I would provide an honest review. And so I read, and thoroughly enjoyed, A Stranger On My Land.  Carrie, a young southern lady, her brother Jay and her aunt Lavinia were driven from their home because of the Civil War. As the fighting grew closer, they were forced to hide in a unusual place where they lived for many months. Without the comforts of home. While gathering firewood, Carrie and Jay came upon a wounded Union soldier, Adam. She hated the war and saw the Union as the enemy. But she knew that without medical help, this young man would not last long. Could she just walk away and let this man die? I’m not a reader of romance, especially historical romance. However, Sandra painted a vivid picture of the setting and characters that peaked my interest. Her mixture of tension and suspense held it to the end. In fact, she may have opened up a whole new world for me. So those of you who like romance and historical romance, pick up a copy. You’re going to love it. For you who are not interested in romance, give the story a chance. It’s a great read. And you, too, may find a whole new world of stories.

The Civil War pitted North against South.  What happens when love blurs the front line?  A delightful, well written story.  Join the Confederate family that finds an injured Yankee soldier on their land.  See what happens when a caring, compassionate young lady forgets about "sides" and takes care of a wounded human.  I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.
