A Time for Everything by Mysti Parker

After losing her husband and only child to the ravages of the Civil War, twenty-five-year-old Portia McAllister is drowning in grief. When she sees an ad for a live-in tutor in another town, she leaves everything behind in hopes of making a fresh start. But as a Confederate widow in a Union household, she is met with resentment from her new charge and her employer, war veteran Beau Stanford.

Despite their differences, she and Beau find common ground and the stirrings of a second chance at love--until his late wife's cousin, Lydia, arrives with her sights set on him. Burdened with a farm on the brink of bankruptcy, Beau is tempted by Lydia's hefty dowry, though Portia has captured his heart.

In another time and another place, his choice would be easy. But love seems impossible amid the simmering chaos of Reconstruction that could boil over at any moment into an all-out battle for survival. Will Beau and Portia find their way into each other's arms, or will they be swept away by raging forces beyond their control?

Carefully crafted and compelling, 4.5 stars I started reading this book expecting it to be a love story, but soon realized it is so much more than that. A Time for Everything is a story of rebuilding lives and hearts in the midst of the destruction caused by the Civil War. It touches topics of grief, loss, love, faith, hope, freedom, and education. Studying to be a teacher myself, I especially enjoyed Portia's wise words on learning and teaching. From the very beginning of the story, I got pulled in. The plot twits kept me turning pages eagerly, and I found myself going to bed way to late more than once because I simply couldn't stop reading! Emotions run high throughout the whole story, making it a fast-paced book. All the action was also a pleasant surprise. There are so many thoroughly developed characters and stories in this book, it's a wonder how the author managed to weave it all together into an elegant novel that both makes sense and doesn't leave loose ends. Although, some dialogues were a bit cheesy for me (in a cute, but somewhat unrealistic kind of way), the story was sweet and enjoyable. I would recommend this carefully crafted novel to all fans of historical fiction. ***I received an electronic copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my review or rating in any way.

A Time for Everything by Mysti Parker is a touching, historical romance set in Tennessee during the reconstruction period after the Civil War. It is a heart-wrenching story of losses, survival and love. The novel is well written with complex characters and sub-plots that support the divide and tensions of the Confederate and Yankee society. I was immediately connected to Portia, Johnny and Beau. The romance between Portia and Beau blossomed slowly, which I felt was believable. The last minute action-packed chapters failed for me. Although I am not a romance genre fan I enjoyed this novel and I would recommend this book to all the historical-romance affectionados. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Reviewed by April Gilly for Readers' Favorite A Time for Everything by Mysti Parker is the story of Portia McAllister, a Confederate war widow who lost her young daughter to typhoid shortly after learning that her husband had died in the war. Distraught with grief, Portia makes an attempt on her life that is thwarted by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law. So Portia makes the decision to leave her home and become a teacher to a young boy in Lebanon, Tennessee, who lost his mother. Her journey to Lebanon is short without much that goes wrong, except for a broken wagon wheel, where Portia meets her young charge, who has gone mute after his father's return from the war. Unsure of what to do, Portia lets her instincts as a mother and teacher help her young charge find his words and eventually bring father and son back together. Beauregard Stanford is not what she expected in an employer, but she continues to do her job and fight for the man to do what is right for his son while trying to keep her heart intact. A Time for Everything by Mysti Parker is your pretty typical historical romance, but stands apart thanks to the unique plot twists that make the story that much more enjoyable. A Time for Everything has beautiful imagery and very realistic characters. The facts blended into the story match what really happened in history, and the story meshes and flows with the facts to make A Time for Everything seem like it could have really happened. The Author's Note helps supplement the facts that Mysti Parker used and goes on to explain that one man who played a prominent part in the story was actually a real man who fought for the same things he fought for in A Time for Everything. A Time for Everything is a beautiful historical romance that could have happened, and that makes it even more beautiful and enjoyable to read!

A Time for Everything was a really good book that I could not put down until I had finished it! Portia has lost her husband, her daughter, and almost her own life. Determined to make a future for herself and escape her past, she decides to take a job teaching the son of a local horse trainer (Beau). Sparks start to fly when she learns that Beau did not hire her at all...his father did in order to find Beau a new wife and his son a new mother. Can she find happiness again in the midst of this hurting family while bringing a little happiness to their own lives?

A Time For Everything is a heartwrenching story about 25 year old Portia McAllister who is drowning in grief after the death of her husband during the Civil War and the lose of her 2 year old daughter to Typhoid fever. Portia decides that it's time to move on from her grief and start living again, so she answers an ad in the paper for a live in tutor. Beauregard Stanford is a former Union soldier who lives in the South with his father Ezra, Son Jonathan, his adopter brother/business partner Harry and his employees Bessie and Isaac. Beau came back from war to find his wife had died and his home was falling apart. Jonny hasn't spoken since his father came home and went into a rage. Beau is desperate to get is horse farm up and running but with the anger still looming after the war he finds it very difficult. a lot of the town folk are upset that he fought with the "Yankees" instead of the Confederates. therefor he has difficulty trying to get loans. Portia and Beau find it is nearly impossible to follow their hearts due to unforseen circumstances and munipulatated circumstances. Will they be able to get past all the obstacles and find a second chance at love or will those circumstances take them in different directions? A Time For Everything is set in a time during Reconstruction following the Civil war where tensions are high and angry is a very common feeling. Slaves that had been set free at the end of the war were still being abused and forced into contracts that they didn't understand. It is a story of sadness, mixed emotions, tremendous lose and second chances at love. if you enjoy stories from the Civil War then you will definitely enjoy this one. don't forget to grab the tissues before you start.

What a great read. Although I usually don't prefer historical s with slavery because it is heart wrenching, this story gave me hope that there was a lot of great people who stuck up for the abolishment of slavery and treated them right. These two characters especially Poe managed to keep me interested to the very last page (to the point I was reading during class). Trust me this is not a book you should miss. Ms Parker managed to make a great tale comes to life with twists and turns that although not highly unexpected still gave a bit of a jump when they came to a pass. I would definitely reread this book. Due to the heartache, the betrayal, the ugliness, and the greatness all wrapped up in one. Anyone who reads this will not feel put upon they will feel rewarded and happy that they got to go on this trail of love, romance, intrigue, heartache, and a new family.
