The reference in the title of this book should be "a tough row to hoe." This is an old farm saying that goes back at least as far as 1819. Most row crops had to be hoed periodically to keep down weeds. Because of various circumstances-----row length, patches of standing water, uneven ground, etc.-----some rows were literally harder to hoe than others. Therefore, when a person had a particulary difficult challenge in life, it was said that he had "a tough row to hoe."

Luke, she's just got problems. Let's go somewhere less... public. Does, say, 8:00 am central time work for you? If yes, meet me at publicly res. 1, if no, ignore me. That would be sad, though. Look through this post. There is not one single mistake in spelling. ~Nira &hearts
