A Tribute to Operetta: A Franz Lehar Gala

This is more than just a Franz Lehár gala, as it is billed on the cover. Along with Lehár, the stellar cast sings light music by other fine composers, like Carl Zeller and the underrated Emmerich Kálmán. American baritone Thomas Hampson slips into this repertoire with chameleon-like ease. His "Da geh' ich zu Maxim" from "The Merry Widow" is delivered with gusto, following in the tradition of the exuberant Austrian singer Eberhard Waechter. Hampson's "Komm, Zigany" from Kálmán's "Countess Maritza" is so steeped in Hungarian charm, he could be singing it over a big bowl of goulash. The great Plácido Domingo sings in a fervently involved way, and high-flying coloratura Eva Lind and the lyric soprano Andrea Rost are also top-notch. Singing the steamy aria, "Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss" from Lehár's "Giuditta," Rost charms convincingly. Conductor Marcello Viotti oversees an amiable, warmly intimate atmosphere, and the Budapest Philharmonic plays with extra authenticity.
