A well written book that is hard to read and hard to put down all at the same time. Diann tells her story of incest, self abuse and trauma with frank writing. Her honest writing gives anyone who has suffered these atrocities hope, hope to be whole again and to be triumphant.
“A Turquoise Life” is a story of survival from incest and terrible childhood tragedy that takes you on Diann’s journey from the depths of the gray that she feels her life is, to the beautiful healing of turquoise, which is where she lives her life today. Once you begin reading, you will find this well-written book hard to put down. Though some of the book is very difficult to read, ultimately it is the story of a woman who rises to the top after a trauma-filled adolescence and adulthood. Diann does not hold back in relating her story, and shows us with utter honesty what some of the results of incest can be. This is a must-read for anyone dealing with abuse and/or loss, and shows that no matter the fire one must go through, there is always hope for happiness.
The abstract art of a woman dancing on the cover of the book intrigued me to want to read more. I found myself fascinated with Diann Kissell's journey and struggles as a child in a large Catholic family and the sexual abuse. How each of her family members coped with their father's murder of three of his ten children mesmerized me, but upset me. I had to put the book down at page 111. But came back to reading it, and couldn't stop reading the book. There were many stepping stones on Dianne's and her family's journey that they approached with strength and courage; such as Diann's life with her husband Joe. I admire Diann's willingness and openness to work with a psychotherapist, and to acknowledge what made her vulnerable. This helped her grow and provided continued healing. The letters her family members wrote after reading this book provided interest and intrigue, too. This book will definitely help victims of abuse. It also shows how people can heal and find happiness. Truly an inspirational book written by Kathy Bird for Diann Kissell. A must read for your reading pleasure.
This is a difficult book to read but Diann's genuine quest to share her story to help others makes it a compelling read. She doesn't sure-coat the realities of her life and her choices along the way. Courage, endurance, genuine, heart-felt come to mind while being absorbed in her life. I couldn't put it down.
