This fascinating document is a welcome reminder of the many, many traditions that encompass modern Judaism. The Abayudaya, a rural Ugandan congregation who converted en masse to Judaism in 1919, have, with greater contact with Western Judaism, adopted many traditional prayers and songs in Hebrew. Among them are the Sabbath-welcoming "Lekhah Dodi," "Adon Olam," "Hinei Ma Tov," and various psalms included on this set. But the Abayudaya have their own buoyant melodies and harmonies, many reminiscent of both English church hymns and South African gospel music. The mix bursts with joy, a far cry from the dirge-like pieties of the Eastern European Jewish tradition. The tribe's other traditional songs -- lullabies and praise songs, mostly -- are touchingly direct. Then there's the Abayudaya's drumming traditions, expected from an African tribe but bracingly fresh from the western Jewish perspective. This collection, based on a series of recordings both in situ and in makeshift studios, paints a glowing portrait of a people deeply in love with their chosen faith, who have persevered through the dark days of Idi Amin's despotic rule to flourish, in control of their own destiny. For a joyous antidote to Judaism's lachrymose history, give these African brothers and sisters a listen.
