Maybe it's not a coincidence that German born Dirk K. bears an uncanny resemblance to Boney James; his very melodic, cool, and easygoing debut About You (Countdown/ULG) is precisely the electric guitar equivalent to a James project. It's hard to ignore all the same elements -- R&B flavored production values, radio friendliness with just enough spirited, tinkering solo time to keep it adventurous, well chosen guest artists (Paul Taylor and the ubiquitous Rick Braun) and, of course, picture perfect covers of Shanice's singalong "I Love Your Smile" and Babyface's lush "Everytime I Close My Eyes." And yet despite those familiar, no doubt marketing-driven trappings and his stern avoidance of blistering solos, Dirk's fluid guitarisma is unique enough to forge its own niche. A blindfold comparison to Larry Carlton's and Steve Laury's more restrained efforts would be the fairest assessment. No points for innovation, but it's as in the pocket as it needs to be.
