About the Author

Angela Randels-Thorp, CVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), is Team Director for 1^st Pet Veterinary Centers, an emergency, specialty, and general practice hospital with three locations in Arizona.  She is a published author and routinely lectures internationally on both critical care and internal medicine topics, including acid-base and electrolyte imbalances. 

David Liss, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), is Program Director of a Veterinary Technology program at Platt College in Los Angeles, California, is an ICU technician at VCA Veterinary Specialists of the Valley in Woodland Hills, CA, and is the owner of a consulting business, Veterinary Training and Consulting, Inc. He routinely lectures nationally on critical care topics, and is a widely regarded educator and teacher.

Description: This book provides a chapter-by-chapter description of the various disorders of the major ions sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium. Other chapters include an introduction; explanations of traditional and strong ion approaches; metabolic, respiratory, and mixed acid-base disorders in the traditional approach; and electrolytes and acid-base issues in companion exotic animals.
Purpose: In the introductory chapter, the authors state that the goal is "to provide a useful, easy-to-learn, and practical approach to the concepts regarding acid-base and electrolytes." The authors have met that goal, although the illustrations could be of better quality.
Audience: The book is written by veterinary technicians for veterinary technicians. It is of high quality and moderate complexity and may be too in-depth for readers who are not veterinarians.
Features: The editors are to be commended for including a chapter on the strong ion approach to acid-base in veterinary patients. This feature is still lacking in many books, despite the wide scientific acceptance of the strong ion approach. It is often omitted for its mathematical complexity and potential lack of utility, but the author of that chapter does a good job of explaining the easy utility of strong ion difference clinically even if the total strong ion approach remains out of reach practically. Unfortunately, many of the illustrations are of substandard quality, especially since it is apparent that they were rendered in color but ultimately printed in black and white and shades of grey. The caption for Figure 13.1 even refers to "the blue arrow" which one is left to assume is the grey arrow but not black arrow, overlaid on a black-and-white photograph of a rabbit pinna.
Assessment: This is an affordable, useful addition to the veterinary acid-base literature and could be used by students or practitioners of veterinary medicine or veterinary technology.
