Acts and the General Epistles of the New Testament: Exploring Important Passages of the Bible
"Acts and the General Epistles of the New Testament— Exploring Important Passages in the Bible" is Bruce C. Salmon's latest work in the Spelunking Scripture series. The third installment asks the crucial question: How is it possible to preach on the same scripture passage again and again and have something new to say? Well, it is a matter of spelunking scripture. It is a matter of moving beyond the "what" question to the "so what" question of the scripture text.

Each chapter takes a look at Acts and the Epistles in a way that is relevant to our modern world without losing sight of Jesus' message. Salmon writes: "The primary criterion is Christ." The particular passages included in this work were selected based on their importance within the Bible and their themes. In addition to Salmon's own study, readers will be provided a chance to reflect on the material through the carefully crafted discussion questions.

Spelunking Scripture is a series inspired by Salmon's sermon notes over the course of 33 years. During that time he had preached more than 1,500 sermons. "Acts and the General Epistles" explores these familiar passages and messages with fresh eyes.

About the Author

Bruce Salmon served for 33 years as pastor of Village Baptist Church in Bowie, Maryland. During that time, he preached almost 1,500 original Sunday morning sermons, including 108 sermons based on passages from Acts, 24 from Hebrews, 26 from James, 32 from 1 Peter, and 15 from 1 John. For the last 18 years of his ministry, he taught a Sunday morning pastor’s class in which adults read and discussed entire books of the Bible.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Salmon received the Bachelor of Arts with a major in English from Baylor University and the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also received the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University, with a specialization in Clinical Pastoral Counseling.

Salmon has served on several committees of the D.C. Baptist Convention and on several commissions of the Baptist World Alliance. In addition to this volume and others in the series Spelunking Scripture, he is the author of Storytelling in Preaching (BSSB, 1988) and Preaching for the Long Haul: A Case Study on Long-term Pastoral Ministry (Nurturing Faith, 2019).

Salmon is husband to wife Linda, father to grown children Amy and Marc, father-in-law to Stacey, and grandfather to granddaughter Ford. In addition to studying the Bible, his interests include spectator sports, current events, music, museums, golf, and travel.
