A lovestruck lady charms the duke of her dreams during an expedition on the high seas in this sexy, swashbuckling novel from USA Today bestselling author Bronwen Evans.

Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford, has a mission: sail to the Mediterranean and track down Lady Hestia Cary’s missing father. It is a straightforward task, but for two rather vexing complications. First, the sea holds painful memories; second, for her own safety, Hestia is to accompany him. As Alex battles the demons of his past, he must also resist Hestia’s surprisingly skillful attempts at seduction. After all, Alex has sworn to leave her untouched, and he intends to honor that vow—until he can properly ask the Earl’s blessing.

Ever since His Grace rescued Hestia from the arms of a Turkish pirate six long years ago, her heart has belonged to Alex. So when he agrees to help find her father, Hestia is thrilled. Although Alex tries to hide it, there’s passion in his eyes—and a frisson of desire in the air—whenever they meet. On board ship, miles from home, Alex won’t be able to deny her any longer. But with scoundrels lying in wait, she may not live to tell the tale of her conquest.

It took a minute for Hestia to catch up with the conversation. She saw the fear on her aunt’s face and went cold inside. “If I die before I marry he gets everything.”

“Or he marries you. Either way he’d get hold of your fortune. Marriage would raise fewer questions than father and daughter dying suddenly and close together.”

Alex’s quietly spoken facts unnerved her. “I don’t know what would be the worse fate. Yes I do, marriage to him would be a slow death. I’d never marry him.”

“He’s the type of man that would not give you a choice. He’d coerce you under pain of death, or worse simply hold you captive, marry you, and after a suitable period of time kill you.”

“I cannot guarantee her safety if she stays here. Who would protect us from Fredrick?” Lady Eliza had a good point. “No one is likely to believe our story.”

He ran a hand through his hair. “It’s just as dangerous taking you with me. No. We have to find another way to protect you.”

His words were true.

Hestia knew how lawless the Mediterranean could be. She still had nightmares about the time she was captured by Turkish pirates when she was younger. If Alex hadn’t come for her . . . A shudder wracked her frame.
She did not really want to go back to the Mediterranean. But with Fredrick desperate to ensure her father, or anyone who knew what he had done, did not return to England, she would be putting herself in danger again if she stayed.

Coldness came calling even though the fire was roaring in the grate.

“Is there another way? I assure you I’m keen to find one.”

Her aunt merely shrugged. Alex chewed his bottom lip obviously trying to think of a solution. He stood and began pacing. He stopped and seemed about to speak, but then shook his head. He resumed pacing.

“I could simply go into hiding,” she suggested.

He spun to face her. “Where and with whom? Unless we have a valid reason you’ll be ruined. All sorts of scandal will swirl around you.”

“Can’t we clear that up once Father returns?”

“What if he does not return?” he said bluntly. “No one will believe your story.”

Her aunt began to quietly sob. “Your reputation is already tarnished by your capture. The scandal has finally begun to settle down, and you have been receiving honorable proposals of marriage from fine men. Another scandal would put paid to all your hard work.”

Alex stopped pacing and took his seat. “There is our answer. You must marry.”

In one moment Hestia’s world went from trouble to exquisite joy. But it only took one look to realize he was not proposing himself as the groom.

Her aunt turned appealing eyes her way. “Lord Barratt offered the day before Fredrick’s news of your father’s death. I’m sure he could be persuaded of the need for a special license.”

“No.” This time she said it more firmly.

“Lord Barratt is an honorable man, a bit short of coin, but he doesn’t have any vices I’m aware of.”

“Then you marry the man,” she said, and shivered with revulsion. He was polite, staid, almost as old as her father, and had the terrible habit of chewing his fingernails to the quick.

Accompanying Alex on the journey was looking a far better solution than a lifetime of revulsion.

Plus there was one upside. The thought of spending so much time in close proximity to Alex thrilled her and pushed her fear aside. He would be there to protect her, and this time she would not do anything foolish, like wandering off to swim privately in a deserted white-sand cove.

“This is not getting us anywhere. I can’t protect my niece here. Fredrick is too devious and ruthless. My brother’s friends are long gone, and being in the wilds of Wales is not a safe place to be.”

Alex seemed to consider Lady Eliza’s words. “It’s likely just as dangerous if she comes with me. Look what happened the last time she was in the Mediterranean.”

“I was young and foolish last time. This time I’m older and wiser. I will obey your commands at all times, and when off the ship I could dress as a man.”

He ignored her and spoke to her aunt. “There is one problem. If both Lady Hestia and I leave London at the same time, won’t Fredrick’s suspicions be aroused?”

“What if I do not leave?”

I really loved Alex and Hestia's story!! She has been in love with him since he rescued her at the age of 16. But because of things in Alex's past, he doesn't believe that he is good enough for Hestia. The pair team up to try and find Hestia's father and that brings them closer together, but can Alex get past his feelings of inadequacy? This was a great start to a new series by Evans!

Author Bronwen Evans continues to challenge the reader with her hard-hitting provocative storylines. In Addicted to the Duke she hits on subjects not normally discussed, opium and laudanum addiction as well as others that you will find out by reading the book. While reading the Prologue I wasn't sure if there would be a way for me to find this book a romance but I love this author so really there was no options for me not to give this book a try. WOW.....this was an impactful read and Alexander's character was handled superbly taking the reader deeply into how he got addicted and why he still struggled with his demons as he did. There are richly detailed heartbreaking parts to this book that will cause the reader to feel Alexander's pain and want to hold him and take away his fears. Hestia's character is strong and soft if that is possible. She has a steel backbone but a soft womanly exterior. Her heart is firmly fixed on loving Alexander so she does everything she can to get his attention. A well rounded secondary cast adds to this thought-provoking storyline keeping the reader enthralled with this fast-paced ever changing read. Because this book made me uncomfortable as well as mesmerized I give it 5 STARS. Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Lady Hestia, (an earl's daughter) was abducted and sold to the pirate Murad. She was saved by Lord Alex, who had been a prisoner of Murad for many years. Alex still suffers nightmares of that time. His captivity wasn't spent behind bars; it was of the mind... Compelling historical romance! Explores contemporary problems in historical content. Hestia, Alex, David and the other characters were shown to be smart, caring and competent while still showing their humanity in their flaws. Some things were echoed and rehashed, unnecessarily, didn't take away from the mastery of the book; it's power in dealing with issues including drug addiction, shame and self-esteem. Enjoyed! Voluntarily read ARC for honest review.

Alex has been looking for revenge against Murad, the Turkish pirate who captured him and kept him captive for two years. He had never thought it would be the beautiful Hestia who presents him with that chance. Hestia has loved Alex from the day he freed her from the hands of Murad. When she finds herself in a difficult situation that threatens her life, she asks Alex for help. I love Bronwen Evans’ books but this one is totally different from the others I’ve read by her. Although I enjoyed reading it, I found it very repetitive and full of inconsistencies. However, I loved Hestia. Her love for Alex is so great that no matter what people think about it, no matter Alex’s behavior towards her, or her father’s attitude for him. I liked Alex as well, although he was so damaged because of the things he was forced to do under the influence of opium that he was not able to see how much he loves Hestia. As the book I read was an advanced copy and I consider that it was not totally edited, I have decided to give it a four stars rate. I received a free review copy of this book by NetGalley

Alex & Hestia were awesome! I absolutely loved these characters. The sparks between them every minute of the books were explosive. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. The way they loved each other but were denied was so exciting and challenging that I wasn't able to put this book down. The series is titled Imperfect Lords and couldn't be more accurate. While Alex wasn't perfect he was absolutely amazing and such a good person, who could blame Hestia for falling in love with the rogue! I can't wait to read more in this series!!!

Historical Romance mixed with addiction issues, who knew it could be a pretty decent book? But it was and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The characters were fun and I didn’t have an issue connecting or falling for them in the slightest. Alex and Hestia are perfect for each other! The book does get a bit repetitive at times, but Addicted to the Duke is a good read otherwise! * I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Netgalley. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.*

Alex and Hestia's story is surrounded by the complications of opium addiction. In today's culture and the heroine epidemic that's is overtaking many of our young people, this is a timely story that takes the same complications and gives a mirror to them. Alex is fighting his attraction to Hestia, as he feels he's not good enough for her due to his opium addiction and struggling sobriety. He loves her and feels responsible for her, which drives them both into some dangerous & life threatening situations. Hestia's belief in Alex and second chances eventually saves them both, and her addiction to him turns out to be all that's needed to bring him around to her thinking. *I received an arc from the publisher through NetGalley for an honest review

A terrible past haunts Alex and he must face his demons when he rescues Hestia. She knows her heart belongs to Alex, but it takes a lot of faith, patience, and strength to help him find his way to his own heart. Alex is a very tortured soul, physically and emotionally, and I wanted to help him see the light. Hestia is young and honest, but learns and accepts the bad in the world, and I applauded her strength. I highly recommend this story and give a mild warning about the dark aspects of this story. It kept me reading whenever I could. I enjoy Ms. Evans stories, and look forward to more in this series. I received a copy of this story through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.

This is a well written story that is filled with love, passion and redemption. Alex, the Marquess of Tavistock, endure unbelievable abuse when he was held captive by Murad. When he escaped he was a broken man addicted to opium. He felt then and now that he's unworthy of love. Alex cheated the brutal Turk of his prize when he rescued Lady Hestia. She's an innocent. He won't let her be hurt. Alex is her hero, but he won't let her commit to him. I cared for these characters. Their plight tugged at my heart. Alex has his flaws and his secrets, but he learned from his mistakes and become a better person. Hestia is a loving and caring woman. She want Alec to be hers. Can she reach him and help him put the past behind him? Bronwen Evans has written great emotional characters. Their dialogue is both touching and passionate. I enjoyed how they cared and protected each other. I couldn't put this book down until I knew they were safe. I wanted them to have their HEA. This story is a great addition to the Imperfect Lords series. I can't wait for Stephen's story. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.

As any good story that has pirates should be, ADDICTED TO THE DUKE is a wild ride. Bronwyn Evans kept me captivated from the start with this adventurous tale of Dukes and Lords, Pirates and Sultans, danger and deception, and love and honor that starts in London and sails to the Greek Islands. There were many twists and setbacks as the hero and heroine, Alexander Bracken, the Duke of Bedford and Lady Hestia Cary fought for their lives and for their love... repeatedly. Both characters were strong-willed and determined, and not always in agreement. Alex didn't believe he was capable of love and would never be deserving of Hestia's love. Hestia knew she could never love another. As in all good romances, love wins in the end and the journey to that end is well worth the read. 4 stars ~Complimentary copy downloaded from NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Addicted to the Duke by Bronwen Evans is #1 in what promises to be an intriguing new series, "Imperfect Lords". Bronwen Evans continues to write, a brilliantly and masterfully work of romance! Such feelings and emotions shown throughout this powerful and compelling story, are hard to convene to readers. But she managed it, beautifully. Very impressive! I loved Alex, his desire to survive, his revenge was well deserved, and his feelings of not being worthy was honest, and true feelings. I understand how people who have been or seen such abuse, could face such feelings. It addresses the inner turmoil of such things and how love can heal their wounds. Well done! It also addresses the issues of drug abuse and disabilities, tactfully and honestly. Alex defintely deserved a life of love and happiness. He did not deserve to feel shame for his misfortune, especially, since it was not his fault. To live in captivity for two years and survive, made him a better man, and helped to shape him into the man became. Hestia was loveable, feisty, fearless, admirable, and very stubborn, albeit a bit naive, but she was determined to get her man. She also understood Alex, for what he was, not what he thought he should be, for people to respect him, and love him for himself. I think her love for Alex made her a bit reckless, at times. I liked how Hestia stood by Alex at all cost, even at her own risk. She was very determined to save her man. I loved how Alex and Hestia, managed to push past their fears, insecurities, and their past to find healing, love, and just maybe a HEA. I think "Addicted to the Duke" was an emotionally charged tale. One that deals with issues of sexual and drug abuse, as well as, opium addiction. Ms. Evans did a wonderful job writing about tough issues that are quiet common in today's world. Readers will be able to connect to Alex and Hestia's story. I certainly did! I know people who faced the same issues as Alex, some gave into the addiction for the oblivion it brought, others was overcome and couldn't let it go. Sexual abuse, rather, male or female is devastating to all. I read "Addicted to the Duke" in one day. I couldn’t put it down. I was glued to the pages of Alex and Hestia's story, from the first page to the last. A must read Historical Romance. I can't wait to read the book 2 in the "Imperfect Lords" series, they are certainly going to be, imperfect, flawed but oh so lovable. A must read Historical Romance. I received a complimentary copy. Alex is a dark character, but I really like him. He was held captive by a pirate for two years and became addicted to opium. Hestia had to be rescued by Alex when she was 16. She was kidnapped and was being sold to the same pirate that held Alex captive. Now, four years later, she needs Alex's help once again. He has been avoiding her because he knows if he is near her, he would want to keep her for his own. Hestia has gotten word that her father is dead. She knows this isn't true, but his heir is trying to take over everything, including her. She must find her father and save her father's estate and herself. She and Alex come up with a plan. While searching for her father, Hestia and Alex find betrayal, heartache and love.

Alexander must overcome a painful past while helping Hestia find her father. She has loved Alexander for long time and wants a future with him. The medicine of history was helpful at times however this book delves into the lesser known long standing problems with some treatment. This author always delivers an excellent tale of intrigue and love for her characters. Keeps the reader turning pages to the end. Ebook from Netgalley and publisher with thanks. opinions are entirely my own.

This was an entertaining adventure about a woman, Hestia, who has been in love with Alex for the past 4 years, ever since he saved her from Turkish Pirates.  Alex has done everything he could, except marry someone else, to push Hestia away, going as far as to let her catch him with another woman in a very compromising way. He does not believe he deserves her due to the fact that he had been held captive by the same Turkish pirate, who kidnapped Hestia, for two years, having to do things he is ashamed of doing in order to survive.  But when her father is presumed dead by a cousin in order to claim the title, Alex is the only man she can think to go to for help.  He agrees to help her find her father and they set off for the Mediterranean to face both of their demons and their attraction for each other. Alex has ulterior motives for helping Hestia, he was to seek vengeance from the man who enslaved him, though he keeps that a secret from Hestia. He has every intention of fighting his desire for Hestia but being on a confining ship for weeks on end inevitably leads to passionate encounters. Hestia wants to win Alex, but she comes to realize she really doesn't know who Alex is and he refuses to enlighten her about himself and what he went through while enslaved.  She sets out to prove to him that love can heal and the past does not have to control the future. I enjoyed the story, it had highs and lows in the emotional turmoil category, though my one frustration was that as Hestia learned that Alex didn't truly care for her the way she thought he did (supposedly) she comes to the conclusion to step back only to wake the next day ready to fight for him again.  It was like one minute her heart breaks at finding out he loved another woman (going as far as to call out the other woman's name in a drug induced state) and coming to realize he didn't love her and never did to back to being optimistic about her chances to win him.  I would have loved for her to actually stick to the notion that he didn't love her, but rather was in love with another woman, and to let him come to realize he did and fight for her.  She seemed to be the only one truly fighting for a relationship and the few moments when he realizes how much he cares for her, he doesn't act on it (when he thinks he is going to lose her to men from his ship who try to kidnap her). I wanted Alex to at some point fight for her, but she, in the end, rescues him from the Turkish pirates and is strong for the both of them, which is cool in a way, but I needed the two characters to be a bit more equal in the ability to fight for one another. I understand the demons Alex faced and I understand why he thought he was unworthy of her love, but he seemed to only show his passion and love for her while they were having sex. Afterward he kind of steps back into an aloof manner. With this said, I did love the story and their adventure.  The characters were strong and the plot was enjoyable.  The conflict and villains were formidable but not over the top. There were surprises and twists along the way that did keep me turning the pages to the very end.  The ending was great and the epilog gave me both the nice wrap-up to the story and teased me about what is to come next.  I liked it.

Addicted to the Duke is about the Lady Hestia Cary, and Alex Bracken, the Duke of Bedford. The story begins with Alex rescuing Hestia from Sultan Murad Bayezid., who had imprisoned Alex four years earlier. The story picks up four years later when Fredrick Cary, Hestia's distant cousin, brings a body home that he claims is Hestia's father. With her father supposedly dead, he will become the Earl of Pembroke. The story recounts their effort to find her father, and keep her safe from Cary. Without giving the whole plot away, this book deals with the addicting effects of opium, and the Duke's struggle with it, and the effect of his captivity with Murad. I found the descriptions of the effects of addiction to be mostly realistic, and enjoyed how the author dealt with this difficult topic. The main storyline was how the Duke came to realize he could love and be loved. There were a few editing errors, but they didn't take from the enjoyment of the story. All in all, a good read, and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. I was given and advanced copy of this book for a honest review from netgalley

I've read other books by Ms. Evans and this book, though dark, is enjoyable. Dealing with the subject of addiction and the power to overcome it, is a timely issue, but in the Regency period, not much was known about the addictive properties of opium and laudanum. I could feel the struggle Alex, Duke of Bedford, was facing every day. Captured by a Turk during the war and held for 2 years, Alex was addicted to opium and Murad's sex slave. When he rescues sixteen-year-old Lady Hestia from the same evil Turk, she falls hard for him. Relationships become even more tangled because it was Hestia's father who had rescued Alex from Murad years earlier and when Alex returns Hestia unharmed to her father, he extracted a vow from Alex to never offer for his daughter. This story is not the usual Regency romance. Most of the book takes place on the high seas where Alex and Hestia cannot hide from each other. I did get a little tired of Alex's internal dialogue about not being good enough for the innocent Hestia. Romance, redemption and vanquishing an enemy makes this story an very enjoyable read. It doesn't take place in the ballroom so many of the tons rules are not restricting the hero and heroine. There were a couple of excellent twists that caught me by surprise. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review. I loved this book. The love story between Alex and Hestia is well written and keeps your attention. Also the storyline of their previous and later capture by the Turk pirate Murad adds great drama to this book. I have read several of Evans historical romance novels and they have all been wonderful books. I would highly recommend this one. I hope Stephen will be featured in his own story.

Bronwen is one of my favorite authors. I love the way she writes. Although this is not her usual style. This one is intense and a little dark. Alex and Hestia really go through so much you begin to wonder if they are gonna make it through. So many things keep happening to them that it had me on pins and needles. I didn't want to put the book down so I could see what was next.

Lady Hestia Cary is in trouble. She has to find her father before he is declared dead and her cousin, Fredrick, kills her for her inheritance. She asks Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford, for help. He accompanies her back to the Mediterranean where they both first met. Six years ago, Alex saved Hestia from the cruel arms of a Turkish pirate. Since then, Hestia has been enamored with Alex, and sees this opportunity as her last chance to woo him. This was a beautiful historical romance that has enough action and adventure to keep your bedside lamp on all night. I loved how the author uses characters that have both a good and a dark side. One minute they can be dastardly pirates and a moment later they become gentlemen rogues with honor. Everyone who loves a pirate romance needs to read this book. 'Addicted to the Duke" by Bronwen Evans is the First book in the New Series "Imperfect Lords". This is the story of Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford and Lady Hestia Cary. Hestia was kidnapped with she was 16 years of age and was going to be raped and taking as a slave if not for Alex. The man that was going to hurt Hestia was once his captor..the man got Alex hooded on drugs and went along with allot of what that man used to do as his slave. But no more and he is now there to save Hestia. About 4 years later we find Alex is now the Duke of Bedford and tries to avoid Hestia. Alex knows that Hestia has feelings for him but feels she is to good for him. So he has been pulling away from her until he is called to her house. There he learns her father is possibly dead and that Hestia and her Aunt want his help finding her father. Hestia explains that her father's heir is saying that her father is dead and he is now taking over. In addition with her father's death she inherits money from her mother's estate. Which has put her in danger of being forced to marry or killed. Alex has agreed to go look for her father and she is planning to go with him. It was hard for me to put this book down. I wanted to see how their story would play out. This was another great story by Ms. Evans. "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."

Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. I am normally a Bronwen Evans fan, but this book was not for me. Alex saves Hestia, and she falls in love with him. Alex knows she was infatuated with him, so he goes out of his way to avoid her. He is .dependant on laudanum and woman, to forget what he went thru. Hestia knows he is with other woman, so if it were me, I would move on. This is not a love story for me, maybe you will enjoy it.
